ORU's Luper Sets Single-Game Scoring Record

Oral Roberts 76, La Salle 55
TULSA, Okla. - (www.orugoldeneagles.com) Freshman Kevi Luper scored a Summit League single-game record 44 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Oral Roberts University women's basketball team past La Salle by a score of 76-55 on Friday at the Mabee Center. The Golden Eagles improved to 2-1 overall, while the Explorers fell to 1-2 on the season.

Luper scored the second-most points in ORU history behind Stacy William's 50-point effort in 1990. The 44 points were the most scored at ORU since Williams tallied 41 in 1989.

The Strang, Okla., native went a school-record 19-of-25 from the field, while going 3-of-6 from three-point range and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.

Janae Voelker secured her 23rd-career double-double and extended her double-figure scoring streak to 43 consecutive games with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Jaci Bigham chipped in 11 points, while Dominique Allen and Jordan Pyle each pulled down eight rebounds.

The contest was back-and-forth through the first 30 minutes. Trailing by three points with 13 minutes remaining, Luper secured a three-point play, and after a made field goal by La Salle, pulled off another three-point play to put the Golden Eagles up by a point.

With the game tied at 51 with 9:31 remaining, the Golden Eagles put together a 20-2 run, including 10 points from Luper. After Voelker made two free throws to put ORU ahead 53-51, Georgia Jones, Voelker and Luper all hit consecutive treys to bust the game open.

Luper scored the opening nine points for ORU, and 17 of the team's 21 points to put the Golden Eagles ahead 21-16 early in the opening half.

The Golden Eagles shot 43 percent from the field (28-of-65), while holding the Explorers to 32 percent (18-of-56). ORU shot 88 percent (14-of-16) from the charity stripe.

Ashley Gale led La Salle with 13 points, while Jamie Walsh chipped in 10 points and Morgan Robertson added nine points and 10 rebounds.


Wyoming 68, North Dakota State 60
FARGO, N.D. - (
www.gobison.com) The University of Wyoming  used an 18-5 in the game's final six minutes to defeat host North Dakota State University by the score of 68-60 in a non-league women's basketball game played Friday, Nov. 20, before a crowd of 1,343 at the Bison Sports Arena.

NDSU (1-2) had reeled off a 7-0 run of its own after the midway point of the second half. The Bison led 28-27 at halftime, but the game was tied on five occasions and the lead changed hands three times after the break.

North Dakota State's Ashley Samuelson tied the game at 50-50 with 8:01 left after receiving a Hannah Linz pass. Inger Hodgson then scored the next five points on a three-pointer and converting a layup on a pass from Whitney Trecker to put the Bison ahead 55-50 at the 6:25 mark.

Kristen Scheffler gave the Cowgirls (4-0) a lead for good at 56-55 one of her four three-pointers with 5:13 left. Scheffler led Wyoming with 17 points. The Cowgirls connected on 11 of 22 three-pointers overall and hit 51.9 percent from the field in the second half.

Aubrey Vandiver made 6 of 7 free throws in the game's final 1:14 to help keep North Dakota State at a distance. Vandiver recored a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jade Kennedy added 12 points.

The Bison did pull to within 64-60 with 40 seconds left on a Katie Birkel layup, but couldn't come any closer. Birkel scored 15 points and added a career-high eight rebounds. Hodgson scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half.

Six-foot-five freshman Janae Burich led the Bison with a season-high 19 points. She made 5 of 7 from the field and 9 of 12 from the foul line. Burich added six rebounds, two blocked shots and an assist.

NDSU made 41.5 percent from the field, but held a 41-30 rebounding advantage. However, Wyoming scored 15 points off of 17 Bison turnovers.


Wichita State 70, Western Illinois 45
WICHITA, Kan. - The Fighting Leathernecks dropped a 70-45 contest to Wichita State Friday night in Wichita, Kan.

Erica Lewis led Western with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and also grabbed a team-high four rebounds.

Sam Houston State 74, Centenary 49
SHREVEPORT, La. - (www.gocentenary.com) The Centenary women's basketball team dropped its fourth consecutive non-league game to Southland Conference foe, Sam Houston State, 74-49, on Friday evening in the Gold Dome.

The Ladies (0-4) struggled to overcome a feisty Bearkat team, who forced Centenary into 30 turnovers on 15 steals.

An early three by senior Bethany Joseph put the Ladies up 3-2. It was a 15-0 run in the first half that gave Sam Houston a 16 point lead at 29-13 with three minutes to play. Senior Michaela Berg ended the run on a shot from deep followed by another three by Joseph to narrow the deficit to 10 with 1:49 to play.

Down by 10, again, Joseph sank net for her third trey of the night to end the half. The Ladies trailed by seven, 31-24.

In the first half alone, Sam Houston recorded 24 points in the paint to the Ladies' four and scored 10 off of Centenary turnovers.

A quick four points by the Bearkats extended their lead to 11 (35-24) to open the second half. Junior Anne Farrell responded with four of her own on the next two Centenary possessions to make it a seven point game.

Jackson's layup narrowed it to 10 at 40-30, but quickly Sam Houston went back up by 11, before a Jackson free throw led to a Natasha Draganic layup to pull within eight, its closest of the half. Though, turnovers proved costly allowing the Bearkats to execute an 8-0 run midway through the half lead by 16 (51-35).

Farrell's layup stopped the run as she scored six points within a five minute span. Within 10, the Ladies struggled with mistakes, allowing Sam Houston to finish with a 14-0 run to end the game.

Centenary shot 39 percent (20-of-52) from the floor, but Sam Houston was better at 48 percent (32-of-70) on the night. The Ladies connected of 4-of-13 from deep for 31 percent, but was only 50 percent (5-of-10) from the charity stripe.

Farrell led all scorers with a game-high 16 points. Jackson finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Joseph chipped in with nine points.

Centenary was outrebounded by just five, 41-36. Behind Jackson's 10 boards was freshman Jalena Sanders with six and Farrell with five.
