Western Illinois 1, SIU Edwardsville 0
MACOMB, Ill. (goleathernecks.com) - Nathan Bruinsma's goal in the 13 minute gave Western Illinois a 1-0 victory over SIU-Edwardsville, Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Bruinsma's goal, his second of the season, came after collecting a rebound from Arthur Paszkowski's shot. Paszkowski nailed a shot from the right side of the six yard box and Cougars goalkeeper Scott Meyer stopped the initial shot, but Bruinsma followed in from the left side to put home the game winner.

"Nathan did exactly the right thing there," Western Illinois head coach Dr. Eric Johnson said. "He followed the ball perfectly and put himself in great shape to get himself a goal."

The Fighting Leathernecks (5-9-1) held the Cougars (5-8-2) scoreless the rest of the way to pick up their third win in their last six matches.

Western Illinois goalkeeper Stephen Paterson picked up his third shutout of the season and the 20th of his career, moving him into a tie with Ric Vondermark for first place in school history.

"We got huge games out of some young guys on defense today," Johnson said. "David Puka, James Raabe and Antonio Katic all played very well today. We had to use some younger guys due to injuries and card situations and those three really stepped up."

Paszkowski paced the Leathernecks with three shots on goal while Bruinsma finished with two. Oskar Gasecki and Martin Browne, Jr. each finished with one shot on goal apiece.

"I thought Arthur played very well today," Johnson said. "He helped open things up for other guys to have some chances today and he looke really good out there."

Western Illinois outshot SIU-Edwardsville by a 13 to five margin, including a seven to three advantage in shots on goal. The Leathernecks took six corners to the Cougars' four and committed 16 fouls compared to 19 for SIU-Edwardsville.

IUPUI 6, Marian 0
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (iupuijags.com) - The IUPUI men's soccer team matched the school record for most goals in a game at the Division I level as the Jaguars rolled past Marian University, 6-0 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Wednesday night. Sophomore sniper Perez Agaba had two goals and an assist and senior Eric Weigman chipped in a goal and an assist as the Jaguars won their second straight contest.

Agaba scored the game-winner in the 39th minute before the floodgates opened up for five second half IUPUI (3-10-3) goals.

"Marian has traditionally come in and given us fits," IUPUI Head Coach Steve Franklin said. "What Marian has always done has they've always made it very difficult to get behind them and get goals. We wanted the guys to keep with the level of intensity that we built on at the end of the Oral Roberts game. The object was to get a couple of goals and get a lead and that afforded us the opportunity to showcase our depth and rest some legs."

IUPUI had the ball in Marian's half of the field almost the entire second half, but struggled to put anything on frame in the first 25 minutes. Finally, junior Weston Hawkins set the table for Agaba's second goal of the season by carrying the ball into the teeth of the Marian (3-13-1) defense to set up a finish from eight yards out.

"That goal changed almost everything and gave us a lot of confidence and was a result of the teamwork we showed," Agaba said. "We just wanted to seal this win up and get into the right mindset for the game on Saturday."

IUPUI wasted little time adding insurance in the second half as junior Kyle Gentile scored in the 47th minute and Weigman followed in the 50th. Gentile drove a low-liner through traffic setup by an Ian Munro corner kick while Weigman got a clean look courtesy of a Caleb Lindemann assist.

Sophomore Matt Guy added his first goal of the season in the 72nd minute when he rebounded a Ryan Robinson assist that was initially stopped by Marian goalkeeper James Dulhanty.

Senior captain John Bradford earned the loudest ovation of the night by netting a penalty kick in the 74th minute for his first collegiate goal and Agaba capped the game's scoring in the 85th minute. The final goal came when Weigman hit a loose ball towards the right post where Agaba cleaned up the scraps and capped his first career multi-goal game.

Agaba led all players with five shot attempts while 16 different Jaguars tried at least shot.

"Perez got his candy and when Perez starts to score goals, we tend to do well," Franklin said. "His first goal kind of gave us a little bit of relief. It took that monkey off our back.

"The end was result was nothing that I expected. I really didn't think it was going to be that lopsided, but we've got a lot of happy kids and that's exactly what you want heading into your last two conference games."

On Wednesday, IUPUI matched the single-game school record for shot attempts (35) and set new records for assists (6) and corner kicks (17). The six goals were the most in a game since a 6-3 win over Loyola on Sept. 5, 2004 while Agaba's five points were the most by a Jaguar since Vangel Nacovski had five against IPFW in November 2007.

Redshirt freshman Alex Mannen recorded his first career shutout, stopping two shots in his third career start. Dulhanty made nine saves in almost 76 minutes before giving way to Ben Dunham.
