2009 Summit League Cross Country Championships Set For This Weekend

CEDAR CITY, Utah - All 10 Summit League teams are slated to compete at the 2009 Cross Country Championships in Cedar City, Utah, on Saturday. Southern Utah will host the event with the men's 8k race beginning at 10 a.m. (MT), followed by the women's race at 11 a.m.(MT)

The men's preseason favorite and three-time defending champion Southern Utah is led by junior Cameron Levins, who holds the top 8k time (23:48.5) and was last year's Summit League runner-up. During the season, Levins earned four Summit League Athlete of the Week awards and was the top-finisher for the Thunderbirds in four races with two individual first-place finishes. Sharla Manuele leads the SUU women with both the top 5k and 6k times in the league this season. Manuele also claimed the Athlete of Week honor four times during the season and recorded two first-place finishes.

The Oakland men, chosen second in the preseason poll, are led by senior Zack Jones, an All-League selection last season, who received Athlete of the Week accolades three times with two first-place finishes on the season. Jones claimed the league's fourth fastest 8k time of 24:39.21. On the women's side, the Golden Grizzlies are led by Kelsey Carmean, who claimed the Athlete of the Week honor twice with two first-places finishes and Lia Jones, a one-time Athlete of the Week honoree, who recorded the fourth-fastest 6k time in the league this season (21:53.5).

The Centenary women are led by Cara Miccoli, the top finisher for the Ladies in four meets this year with a top 6k time (24:20.8) at the Centenary Invitational. Adam Nerio leads the Gents as the top team finisher in every race this season with a top 8k time of 27:12.24.

IPFW is led by Randall Quirk and Becca Selner. Quirk leads the Mastodons as the top team finisher in five races and recorded a top 8k time of 26:55. Selner recorded two second-place finishes with a top 5k time of 18:47 at the Valparaiso Invitational.

Aaron Kremer paced IUPUI in two races this season recording the top finish for the Jaguars at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet earlier this month. For the women, sophomore Ana Paez was the top performer in three meets with a top 6K time of 23:11.3.

UMKC is led by freshman Cosmas Ayabei, who garnered two individual titles this season at the Bob Timmons Classic and the Missouri State Classic.  Ayabei recorded the seventh fastest 8k top time (24:56.7). The women are led by a pair of sophomores, Aubrey Frederking and Etagegn O'Neill, who each led the Kangaroos in one race this season.

North Dakota State's Amy Jo Reuter was the top-finisher for the Bison in every race this season and helped guide the squad to a first-place finish at the NDSU Open. Reuter also recorded her best 6k time (22:14.7) at the Tori Neubauer Invitational, the eighth fastest time in The Summit League this season. On the men's side, sophomore Jake Henderson was the top finisher for NDSU in two meets and earned a top 8k time of 25.50.5.

Last years' Championship MVP and All-League selection, Jonah Lagat paced Oral Roberts this season after recording a third-place individual finish at the Hurricane Festival in September. Lagat posted the league's second- fastest 8k top time (24:09.13) at the Missouri Southern Stampede. Kristen Radcliff, a two-time all-league selection, recorded a top 5k time of 18:61.81 this fall.

The South Dakota State women are led by senior Ashley Storm, an all-league selection last year, who led the Jackrabbits in every meet this season including a second and fourth-place finish at the Ron Pynn Invitational and the Tori Neubauer Invitational, respectively. Michael Krsnak, an all-league selection last year, recorded three top team finishes for SDSU and ran the eighth fastest 8k time in the league this season (24:56.8).

Western Illinois' Carianna Cottone led her squad in every race this season, including a pair of second-place finishes at the Early Bird and Northern Illinois Invitational. Cottone garnered the Athlete of Week accolade after finishing the Bradley Invitational in a time of 21:53, the third fastest time in the league this season. For the men, Eric Anerino paced the Fighting Leathernecks in three meets on the year with his top 8k time (25:53) coming at the Early Bird Invitational.
