Western Illinois 3, IPFW 2
MACOMB, Ill. - (www.goleathernecks.com) The Western Illinois women's soccer team struck three times in the first 26 minutes to take down Summit League opponent IPFW by a 3-2 score, Friday, Oct. 30.

Nora Potempa's goal in the 26th minute gave the Fighting Leathernecks (7-7-2, 4-3-1 Summit League) an early 3-0 lead and proved to be the game-winner.

Miranda Graham found Potempa with a pass from the right corner and Potempa ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net to push Western's lead to three.

The Leathernecks would score twice more in the first 26 minutes. Kellie Julius scored the first goal of the match at the 10 minute mark by knocking in a rebound from Abby Davis' shot.

Western would scored again at the 16:34 mark when Green knocked home a shot off Potempa's corner kick to push the lead to 2-0.

Despite an early deficit, IPFW would storm back with two goals in the 28th minute. Ali Okihiro's goal at the 28:21 mark cut Western's lead to two goals and Lisa Underwood's goal just 32 seconds later pulled the Mastodons (4-11-1, 3-5-0 Summit League) within one.

Neither team was able to find the net in the final 71 minutes of the match, although both teams had chances to score. IPFW nearly tied the match in the 67th minute, but a shot by Brittany Clemons ringed off the post.

The Leathernecks had two more chances to extend their lead in 72nd and 74th minutes. Ali Smyth's shot at the 71:09 mark caught the crossbar and bounced over the net while Potempa's shot at the 73:09 mark bounced off the post.

The Leathernecks held Lisa Underwood, the league's leading goal scorer, to just three shots in the match. In their last three matches, Western has faced three of the league's top seven scorers and allowed just one goal to those players.

Laura Atkinson made seven saves to pick up her fourth win of the season. Both teams finished with 16 shots, though IPFW had a nine to seven advantage in shots on goal.

Western Illinois committed eight fouls to IPFW's five and took eight corner kicks to the Mastodons four.

Western was helped in the match by a great show of support as 300 peopla were in attendance.

IUPUI 3, Oakland 1
INDIANAPOLIS - (www.iupuijags.com) The IUPUI women's soccer team survived rainy conditions and a sloppy Michael A. Carroll Stadium pitch to outlast visiting Oakland on Friday night, 3-1. IUPUI (14-4, 6-2 Summit) posted its school record 14th victory and sealed a spot in the upcoming Summit League Tournament with the victory.

Sophomore Alicia Brock and senior Stephanie Hoffman both scored in the first half and sophomore Chelsi McHenry added some late insurance in the second half in the victory. The game began with a steady rain falling on an already wet field, but conditions quickly deteriorated after kickoff as the rain fell harder and the winds picked up.

A ball seemingly heading over the OU end line that ended up parking just shy of the stripe helped the Jaguars take a 1-0 lead in the game's 13th minute. Sophomore Megan Hock tracked the ball down before playing it back to Brock. The 2008 Summit League Newcomer of the Year got the ball to her left foot and drilled a shot past Shannon Coley for her eighth score of the season.

It was Hock's fifth assist of the season.

Oakland (7-8-1, 4-3-1 Summit) tied the match just 69 seconds later when Lindsey Blair netted her first goal of the season. The OU midfielder hit a free kick from the left flank off an IUPUI defender at the far post, leaving senior goalkeeper Jamie Farrell without a play on the ball.

Hoffman retaliated on a long free kick in the 42nd minute for the eventual game-winner. The lanky defender drilled a 30-yard bomb over the head of Coley for her first goal of the season, just 3:41 before halftime.

Both teams struggled to get quality chances in the second half as puddles on the field made possession and passing more difficult. Despite going against the win for the final 45 minutes, the IUPUI attack had seven second half corner kicks to just two for the visitors.

McHenry scored her first official collegiate goal for insurance in the 77th minute, set up by an assist from freshman Lisa Thomas. Thomas played a ball forward to the UL-Lafayette transfer, who blistered a shot from 15 yards out. The attempt hit off Coley's hands before bouncing inside the left post for the 3-1 lead. McHenry had previously scored at Butler, but the game was canceled due to rain and the statistics were subsequently wiped out.

From there, the Jaguars hunkered down defensively and kept Oakland from quality looks down the stretch. Farrell made nine stops in goal for the Jags as OU outshot the hosts 17-12 overall.

Leanne Fomenko and Brock tied for the game-high with four attempts and junior Kelly Williams put two on frame for the victors.
