FROM THE SUMMIT
What You Need to Know

-The Summit League begins its 28th season of men's basketball Friday with six of 10 teams in action.

-Lindy's 2009-10 College Basketball Annual ranked The Summit League as the No. 20 league in the nation, ahead of both the Mid-American Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference. Last season, The Summit League was ranked No. 21 in the final Sagarin Rankings.

-Oakland's Johnathon Jones returns after leading the NCAA in assists last season, totaling 290 for the season and averaging 8.1 per game. He enters the 2009-10 campaign needing just 32 assists to become the league's all-time leader.

-The Summit League saw the NCAA largest men's basketball attendance increase last season, averaging 30 percent more fans over the previous year and finishing 16th in the league attendance rankings.

-The 2009 Summit League Tournament set league records for attendance, ticket sales and corporate sponsorships in its initial year in Sioux Falls, S.D. This season's tournament returns to the site and over the summer, the contract was extending to include two more seasons through 2011-12.

-In 2009, The Summit League became the first league in history to have both its men's and women's champion reach the NCAA Tournament in their initial year of Division I eligibility.

-Last season, the Summit League sent two men's teams to the postseason for the first time since 2005. North Dakota State pushed Kansas to the limit in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and Oakland played in the inaugural CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, defeating Kent State before falling to Bradley on a three-quarter court buzzer-beater.

LEAGUE NOTES

OAKLAND OVERWHELMING LEAGUE FAVORITE
Oakland was established as the overwhelming preseason favorite in The Summit League based on the annual poll of coaches, SIDs and media. The Golden Grizzlies received 34-of-35 first-place votes and were the league's first team to receive all but one first-place vote since Valparaiso got 21 of 22 votes in the 2001-02 preseason poll.

GOLDEN GRIZZLIES SCORE "HAT TRICK" on PRESEASON All-LEAGUE TEAM
Three Oakland players were selected to the 2009-10 Preseason All-Summit League first team in voting by coaches, SIDs and media. Leading the trio was Johnathon Jones, the preseason choice for Player of the Year, along with Keith Benson and Derick Nelson, who returns after missing the 2008-09 season with a broken foot. The selections marked the first time that a team has had three players on the preseason first team since 2003-04 when Oakland also achieved the feat with Mike Helms, Rawle Marshall and Cortney Scott. That year, the Golden Grizzlies were also chosen as league favorite.

RETURNING TO THE SUMMIT
Two of The Summit League's individual award winners from last season return in Newcomer of the Year Robert Glenn of IUPUI and Sixth Man of the Year Deilvez Yearby of IPFW. Oakland's Johnathon Jones is the lone returning first team All-Summit League selection while second teamers Glenn, Davis Baker of Southern Utah and OU's Keith Benson are back. Baker is the league's top returning scorer after ranking fifth last season at 17.4 ppg. League leaders in five individual stat categories also return including Jones (assists) and Benson (blocked shots) along with IUPUI's Jon Avery (field goal percentage), IPFW's Ben Botts (free throw percentage) and Western Illinois' Ceola Clark (three-point field goal percentage).

SHARPSHOOTERS
Southern Utah led the nation in free throw percentage last season at a 79.6 percent clip and three Summit League teams ranked among the NCAA's top 11 three-point shooting teams. North Dakota State shot 41.2 percent from beyond the arc and placed third nationally while IPFW at 40.9 and Western Illinois at 40.0 finished sixth and 11th, respectively.

HOSTING THE BIG DANCE
A pair of Summit League schools have been chosen to serve as hosts for future NCAA Men's Basketball Championship rounds. Oakland will serve as host for the 2013 First and Second Rounds at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich., while IUPUI will co-host the 2013 Regional at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

JAGUARS GO ON A BASKETBALL MISSION
IUPUI took a seven-day trip to Costa Rica in August that included four exhibition games and the distribution of 2,000 pairs of shoes to needy children. Jaguars head coach Ron Hunter has been instrumental in Samaritan's Feet, an effort to provide shoes to those in need throughout the world.

ORAL ROBERTS LEADS THE WAY IN ALL-TIME SAGARIN RANKINGS
Oral Roberts led The Summit League in the ESPN/Sagarin All-Time Rankings released during the summer. The Golden Eagles placed 118th on the list that ranks active Division I programs since 1937-38.

FACING NO. 1 TWICE?
If the national preseason polls hold true through the first month of the season with Kansas at No. 1 and Michigan State at No. 2, it would mean a first for The Summit League. Oakland could become the first Summit League team to face both a No. 1 and No. 2 ranked team in the same season. The Golden Grizzlies face the Jayhawks on Nov. 25 and the Spartans on Dec. 10. Additionally, no Summit League team has played more than one top-ranked team in the same season.

THE AMAZING RACE
Former Centenary basketball player Herb Lang, who is also a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, and his Globetrotters teammate Nathaniel Lofton, are competing on CBS' The Amazing Race this season. After beginning the show as one of 12 teams competing, the duo has made it to the final five still vying for the $1 million prize.
