FROM THE SUMMIT
What You Need to Know 

-The Summit League begins its 18th season of women's basketball Friday with eight of 10 teams in action.

-Lindy's 2009-10 College Basketball Annual ranked South Dakota State No. 24 in its preseason poll rankings, while the Jackrabbits were ranked No. 25 in the preseason poll released by SportsPageMagazine.

-The Summit League finished 18th in the final 2008-09 Sagarin rankings and was ranked 20th by rpiratings.com. Both rankings were improvements on the previous season.

-South Dakota State captured the first NCAA Tournament victory for The Summit League in women's basketball since the 1998 season. The Jackrabbits, seeded seventh, defeated 10th-seed TCU, 90-55, before falling to second seed Baylor, 60-58 in the second round of the tournament.

-The League returns the top two scorers from last season in Preseason Player of the Year Chazny Morris (17.5) of UMKC and Oral Roberts' Janae Volker (16.5).

-The 2009 Summit League Tournament set league records for attendance, ticket sales and corporate sponsorships in its initial year in Sioux Falls, S.D. This season's tournament returns to the site and over the summer, the contract was extending to include two more seasons through 2011-12. Total attendance was 34,681, while the women's tournament sessions drew a record 16,999 fans.

-In 2009, The Summit League became the first league in history to have both its men's and women's champion reach the NCAA Tournament in their initial year of Division I eligibility.


LEAGUE NOTES

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE OVERWHELMING LEAGUE FAVORITE
South Dakota State was established as the overwhelming preseason favorite in The Summit League based on the annual poll of coaches, SIDs and media. The Golden Grizzlies received 25-of-27 first-place votes and placed four player on the all-league second team. The Jackrabbits were also the preseason favorite a year ago, garnering 23-of-30 first-place votes, and went on to win The Summit League Championship.

UMKC'S MORRIS = PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR
UMKC's Chazny Morris was selected as the The Summit League Preseason Player of the Year. Morris became the first Kangaroo to earn the honor since joining the league in 1994. Morris has been selected to the the postseason first team all-league the last two seasons and was named to the second team following her freshman campaign.

PRESEASON ALL-LEAGUE VARIETY SHOW
Seven of The Summit League's 10 institutions were represented on the preseason women's basketball all-league teams showing well balance across the league. All six members of the first team compete for different schools, while South Dakota State placed four on the second team.

RETURNING TO THE SUMMIT
Two of The Summit League's individual award winners from last season return in Newcomer of the Year Georgia Jones of Oral Roberts and Sixth Woman of the Year Jill Young of South Dakota State. Three first team all-league selections return in Morris, Janae Voelker of Oral Roberts and Julia Whitted of IUPUI, while four-of-five second teamers are back (SDSU's Ketty Cornemann, NDSU's Inger Hodgson, IPFW's Chelsey Jackson, OU's Melissa Jeltema). Morris and Voelker return after finished first and second in the league in scoring at 17.5 and 16.5 ppg, respectively. League leaders in five other individual stat categories also return including Oakland's Brittany Carnago (blocks) and Jeltema (offensive rebounds), Oral Roberts' Jones (assist/turnover ratio) and Voelker (defensive rebounds), SDSU's Young (three-point field goals made) and Southern Utah's Kaila Goff (assists).

LOFTY RANKINGS
Summit League schools ranked in the top 10 in five different team categories, along with four individual categories. South Dakota State was second in won-lost percentage (91.4), third in scoring margin (18.5) and fifth in three-point field goals per game (8.3). Oakland was third in assists per game (17.4) and fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.16). SDSU's Jill Young is the lone returnee in the top 10 after placing third nationally in three-point field goal percentage (46.1), while IUPUI's Jernisha Cann (3.6) and Oakland's April Kidd (3.2) were second and eighth, respectively, in steals per game. OU's Jessica Pike finished sixth in free throw percentage (89.8).

CHALLENGING THE PRESEASON FAVORITES
Nine of the 10 Summit League schools will face at least one team that is ranked in the top 25 in the preseason rankings. Oral Roberts leads the way with three on its schedule in Kansas (Nov. 15), Texas (Dec. 1) and Baylor (Dec. 16) all on the road. A few of the other highlighted games include IPFW (Dec. 29) and IUPUI (Dec. 13) both traveling to Louisville to face last season's national runner-up, Oakland will host Purdue (Dec. 13) with Western Illinois traveling to West Lafayette (Nov. 14). South Dakota State hosts Middle Tennessee (Dec. 13), while both IUPUI (Nov. 28) and Western Illinois (Dec. 22) play at Ohio State.

ONE OF A KIND
In 2009, The Summit League became the first league in history to have both its men's and women's champion reach the NCAA Tournament in their initial year of Division I eligibility. North Dakota State captured the men's title with a 66-64 win over Oakland at the buzzer. South Dakota State overcame a double-digit first half deficit to beat Oakland, 79-69, to win the women's title.
