Four Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-District Honors

ELMHURST, Ill. -- Four Summit League women's student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large honors it was announced on Thursday. IPFW tennis player Ingrid Ballus was selected to the District V First Team, advancing her to the ballot for Academic All-America consideration. South Dakota swimmer Elizabeth Hoffman and South Dakota State swimmers Katie Budahl and Emily Tschetter were named to the District VII Second Team.

Ballus is a junior civil engineering major from Barcelona, Spain. She carries a 3.95 grade point average (GPA) and helped IPFW capture The Summit League Women's Tennis Championship in April. Ballus was named to the All-Summit Team following the championships and earned Player of the Week honors on March 9. She went a perfect 6-0 in league play at the No. 2 singles position and teamed with Amy Recht to go 5-0 at the No. 1 doubles slot as the Mastodons finished 8-0 in the league.

Hoffman earned the honor for the first time in her collegiate career. Hoffman has a 3.94 cumulative GPA and is majoring in biology with a pre-medicine emphasis. Hoffman had an outstanding sophomore season for USD, becoming the first Coyote to win a Summit League Championship when she won the 200 freestyle in February. She also posted runner-up finishes in the 500 freestyle and 100 freestyle at the Summit League Championships. She finished the year with 24 first-place finishes, including wins against programs such as North Dakota, Iowa State, South Dakota State and Kansas. Hoffman also set school records in the 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 freestyle events in 2009-10.

Budahl, a senior from Mitchell, earned the recognition after compiling a 3.83 grade-point average while majoring in health, physical education and recreation. In the pool, Budahl was a three-time individual conference champion, sweeping the breaststroke events at the 2010 Summit League Championships. She set school and Summit League records, while establishing NCAA B-cut times of 1 minute, 2.56 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:13.18 in the 200. She went undefeated in 10 200 breaststroke races during the 2009-10 season. Budahl also has been honored on the Summit League All-Academic Team and Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence.

A senior from Brookings, Tschetter majored in biology/pre-dental and posted a 3.91 GPA. A four-year letterwinner, Tschetter is the school-record holder in the 400 individual medley, setting the mark of 4:33.43 with a third-place finish at the 2010 Summit League Championships. Tschetter also placed fourth inthe 200 breaststroke and sixth in the 100 breaststroke at the league meet. She also has been honored on the Summit League All-Academic Team and Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence.

Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in athletic standing, maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.3 and be a starter or key reserve. The at-large teams are comprised of student-athletes competing in the following sports: bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.
