Oakland Continues to Lead Commissioner's Cup Standings

ELMHURST, Ill. - At the conclusion of the 2010-11 winter season, Oakland has retained its lead in the race for The Summit League Commissioner's Cup with 73.0 points, while South Dakota State sits in second place with 61.5 points. Oakland also holds the top spot for both the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All Sports Award and the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All Sports Award.

North Dakota State comes in third place with 57 points, trailing SDSU by just 4.5 points. The next five slots are each separated by six points or less. Oral Roberts is just 5.5 points behind NDSU with 51 points, followed by Southern Utah in fifth place with 45 points, IUPUI in sixth place with 41 points, while IPFW (39 points) and UMKC (38.5 points) are separated by just half a point. Western Illinois is in the ninth slot with 30 points, followed by Centenary with 16 points.

Oakland has secured its spot at the top of all three standings by winning three of the six winter championships claiming crowns in men's and women's swimming & diving and men's basketball. The Golden Grizzlies also captured fall championships in women's cross country and women's soccer, along with a second place showing in men's cross country and three third place rankings.

The Jackrabbits have finished in the top three in seven of 10 eligible championships, capturing first place in men's cross country and second place in women's soccer and women's swimming & diving.

Meanwhile, the Bison have captured league titles in volleyball and men's and women's indoor track & field with a second-place finish in women's soccer.

The Commissioner's Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men's and women's athletic programs, while the All Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men's sports and women's sports. The men's award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women's award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU's athletic program from 1994-2001.
