Summit League Announces Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence

ELMHURST, Ill. − The Summit League announced its 2010-11 Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence with a total of 1,077 student-athletes from all 19 league-sponsored sports honored for their work in the classroom.

Centenary claimed The Summit League's Institutional Academic Achievement Award with a league-best 44 percent of its list-eligible student-athletes recognized. North Dakota State, Oakland, Oral Roberts and South Dakota State each placed in a tie for second with 42 percent of its student-athletes honored.

The Summit League also recognized Team Academic Achievement Awards in each sport based on percentage of list-eligible student-athletes on the Commissioner's List. Oakland had a league-best four teams claim individual sport honors, while all 10 institutions captured at least one sport award.

Baseball: South Dakota State (50 percent)
Men's Basketball: Southern Utah (36 percent)
Women's Basketball: South Dakota State (64 percent)
Men's Cross Country: Oral Roberts (80 percent)
Women's Cross Country: Oakland (64 percent)
Men's Golf: Oakland (80 percent)
Women's Golf: Oakland (71 percent)
Men's Soccer: Centenary (60 percent)
Women's Soccer: IPFW (61 percent)
Softball: Western Illinois (55 percent)
Men's Swimming & Diving: Centenary (48 percent)
Women's Swimming & Diving: Oakland (67 percent)
Men's Tennis: IUPUI (55 percent)
Women's Tennis: UMKC (75 percent)
Men's Track & Field: North Dakota State (47 percent)
Women's Track & Field: Western Illinois (52 percent)
Volleyball: IPFW (75 percent)

Of the 1,077 student-athletes honored, 29 maintained perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point averages.

In order for a student-athlete to be selected to the Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence, he/she must carry a 3.00 or better cumulative GPA, achieve sophomore academic standing at the institution, have used a year of eligibility and be on the squad list in the sport in which he/she is nominated. Transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates must have completed one academic year at the nominating institution. True freshmen, redshirt freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.

The Summit League is comprised of 10 member institutions − Centenary College of Louisiana, Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne (IPFW), Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. Eastern Illinois University and the University of South Dakota compete as associate members in men's and women's swimming & diving. The league offers championships in 19 sports.
