NDSU Leads Commissioner's Cup After Fall Season
ELMHURST, Ill. - At the conclusion of the 2011-12 fall
season, North Dakota State has the early lead in the race for The
Summit League Commissioner's Cup with 38 points. NDSU also holds
the top spot for the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports Award
while Southern Utah is in the lead for the Dr. William Steinbrecher
Men's All-Sports Award.
The second through fifth place positions are separated by just two
points. UMKC is in second place with 27.5 points, followed closely
by Oakland and South Dakota State who each have 27 points. In fifth
place is Southern Utah with 26.5 points. Oral Roberts is in sixth
place with 24.5 points, while IPFW is in seventh place with 22
points. South Dakota (18.5 points), IUPUI (12 points) and Western
Illinois (12 points) round out the standings.
North Dakota State sits atop the overall and women's standings
after capturing the women's cross country and volleyball titles.
The Bison also claimed second place at the men's cross country
championship and finished the women's soccer regular season as
runners-up.
UMKC had a strong overall showing through the fall season after
placing third and fourth at the women's and men's cross country
championships, respectively. The Kangaroos were also in a tie for
third place in the women's soccer standings.
Oakland had three top five finishes in the fall season, while South
Dakota State captured the women's soccer regular season crown and
placed third in the men's and fourth in the women's cross country
championships.
The Commissioner's Cup is given annually to the member institution
that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement
in league-sponsored sports between its men's and women's athletic
programs, while the All Sports Awards are given to the institutions
that accumulate the most points in men's sports and women's sports.
The men's award is named for former Valparaiso Director of
Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from
1979-2004, while the women's award is named for former Western
Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU's
athletic program from 1994-2001.

Steinbrecher Men's All Sports and Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All
