Basketball / Women’s
The Summit League men’s and women’s basketball wraps up the first half of league play this weekend… The men’s and women’s weekly notebooks and the men’s and women’s resource pages supply all the necessary league info to follow the season.
Two-time defending regular season champion, North Dakota State was selected as the favorite to win the 2014 Summit League Softball Championship in a poll of the league’s seven head coaches … View the full preseason poll and release here … The regular season begins Feb. 7, with all seven league teams competing in non-league tournaments opening weekend.
Five league teams are in action this weekend each hosting a home meet … On Friday, Denver hosts Utah and Eastern Illinois welcomes St. Louis … On Saturday, IUPUI takes on Oakland at home, Western Illinois welcomes Butler and Monmouth and South Dakota State hosts North Dakota … Summit Leaguers still have a combined nine NCAA top-30 individual and relay times, including a pair in the top-10 … Denver’s Dylan Bunch still ranks fourth in the nation in the men’s 1,650 free (14:54.60), while Sam Corea is 10th in the women’s 200 back (1:53.78)
Tennis / Women’s
Denver moved up eight spots in the women’s ITA rankings and three spots on the men’s side as both Pioneer squads are now No. 54 in the latest rankings … DU’s Henry Craig and Maureen Slattery were named Players of the Week … This weekend’s men’s matches include No. 54 Denver against No. 49 BYU and South Dakota State vs. No. 67 Wisconsin … In women’s weekend action No. 54 Denver faces No. 69 Princeton.
Track & Field
For the second consecutive weekend all seven teams are in action … Omaha and Western Illinois are at the Jack Jennett Invitational, a two-day meet hosted by UNI … On Saturday, Fort Wayne hosts the Mastodon Invitational where IUPUI will also be competing, while North Dakota State, South Dakota and South Dakota State are all at the Bill Bergan Invitational … Summit Leaguers have combined for six NCAA top-30 times/marks, including three top-six performances … North Dakota State’s Andy Lillejord is second in the nation in the heptathlon with a score of 5,628 points … On the women’s side, South Dakota’s Megan Glisar is tied for fourth in the high jump (6’0”/1.83m) and Bethany (Buell) Firsick is sixth in the pole vault (13’11.75”/4.26m).
