Each month, The Summit League will feature outstanding student-athlete performances from a selected institution as recognized by its Faculty Athletic Representative. The February installment of The Summit League Scholar-Athlete Spotlight features three student-athletes from North Dakota State.
Alec Espeland, Men’s Cross Country/Track &
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Sr./Pierre, S.D.
Alec enters his senior year as one of the top middle distance runners in The Summit League. He was runner-up in the 800-meter run at both The Summit League Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships during the 2013 seasons. At the indoor championships, Alec also placed fifth in the mile run, while outdoors, he also ran the second leg on the third place 1,600-meter relay team (3:16.70). His career best time of 1:50.48 in the 800-meter finals at the Stanford Invitational last March was the fastest in The Summit League during the season. He ran the 800-meter leg on North Dakota State's school record outdoor distance medley relay (9:41.85) team that placed sixth at the 2012 Drake Relays. Alec was a three-year letter winner on the Bison cross country team. He was named to the 2013 Summit League Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic teams. He has been a Summit League Distinguished Scholar and honored on The Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.
Krista Menke, Softball
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Jr./Friend, Neb.
Major: Exercise Science
Krista is a right-handed pitcher for the North Dakota State softball team. She was selected the 2012 Summit League Pitcher and Freshman of the Year after compiling a 25-13 record with 10 shutouts and a 2.36 earned run average. She posted a 9-7 record with one save, a 3.72 ERA last season as the Bison won their second straight league regular season championship. Krista was named to the 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Midwest Region second team and Summit League all-tournament team. She recorded a no-hitter against Liberty in March 2012. Krista was a five-time Summit League Pitcher of the Week as a freshman and also tabbed as an NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete. On the NDSU career charts, she ranks No. 7 in strikeouts (284) and opponent batting average (.219), No. 8 in shutouts (12) and No. 10 in wins (34). Krista has been a Summit League Distinguished Scholar and honored on The Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.
Wes Satzinger, Baseball
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Sr./Andover, Minn.
Major: Health and Physical Education
Wes was named to the 2013 All-Summit League first team at second base after batting .307 with a career-high five home runs, 10 doubles and 32 RBI. He was landed a spot on the Summit League All-Tournament and All-Academic teams. Wes is the current president of the North Dakota State University Student-Athlete Advisory Council. He was named to the all-league second team selection as a sophomore after hitting .305 with 15 doubles, a triple, home run and 31 RBI. Wes has made only 14 errors in his last 505 fielding chances and been part of 44 double plays. He has hit over .300 in each of his three previous seasons after rebounding from a season-ending shoulder injury in 2010. Wes has been a Summit League Distinguished Scholar and honored on The Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.
