Basketball / Women’s
The Summit League men’s and women’s basketball wraps up the first half of league play this weekend… The men’s and women’s weekly notebooks and the men’s and women’s resource pages supply all the necessary league info to follow the season.
The 2014 regular season begins Friday, Feb. 7, with all seven league teams competing in non-league tournaments opening weekend … Highlighting the opening weekend schedule are a pair of opponents receiving votes in the Top 25 Preseason poll and three teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year … North Dakota State takes on Auburn and Notre Dame, who are both receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Top 25 Poll … The Fighting Irish also made it to the NCAA Tournament last season … Fort Wayne, the 2013 Summit League Champion, faces Valparaiso in the Mastodons’ season opener and South Dakota squares off against Fordham, both opponents went to the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
Three teams are competing in the final weekend before the swimming & diving championships … South Dakota and South Dakota State are at the Minnesota Challenge, while Western Illinois is at Iowa and also competing against Augustana College … The 2014 Swimming & Diving Championships are hosted by IUPUI at the IU Natatorium and begin on Wednesday, Feb. 19 … Summit Leaguers still have a combined nine NCAA top-30 individual and relay times, including three in the top-10 … Denver’s Dylan Bunch ranks fifth in the nation in the men’s 1,650 free (14:54.60) and eighth in the 1,000 free (9:06.26), while Sam Corea is 10th in the women’s 200 back (1:53.78).
Tennis / Women’s
Denver’s men moved up two spots to No. 52 in this week’s ITA Rankings … DU’s Diogo Rocha and Karthryn Hughes were named Players of the Week … Denver and Omaha meet Sunday (Feb. 9) in the season’s first Summit League men’s match.
Track & Field
Four Summit League teams are ranked in the initial USTFCCCA Top-15 Regional rankings … On the men’s side in the Midwest Region, North Dakota State is eighth and South Dakota is 12th … For the women, North Dakota State is ranked ninth and South Dakota is 10th in the Midwest Region … As a league, the women are ranked 13th in the USTFCCCA Conference Index rankings … Omaha’s Sami Spenner was named the USTFCCCA National Division I Women’s Athlete of the Week after posting a pentathlon score (4,406 points) that ranks third in the world and first in the U.S. according to the IAAF rankings … Her score is the top collegiate mark this season and ranks sixth all-time in collegiate top-10 performances … For the third-straight weekend all seven teams are in action with two teams at home … North Dakota State hosts the Thundering Herd Classic on Friday and Saturday, while South Dakota hosts the USD Alumni Meet on Saturday, where Omaha and South Dakota State will also be competing ... Summit Leaguers have combined for six NCAA top-30 times/marks, including four top-10 performances … South Dakota’s Emily Grove leads the nation in the pole vault (14’3.25”/4.35m), while teammate Bethany (Buell) Firsick is ninth in the pole vault (13’11.75”/4.26m)… Also for the Coyotes in the top-10 is Megan Glisar tied for third in the high jump (6’0.5”/1.84m) … On the men’s side, North Dakota State’s Andy Lillejord is fifth in the nation in the heptathlon (5,628 points).
