This week’s show includes highlights of South Dakota State’s women’s basketball’s WNIT run, baseball and softball highlights, a feature on Western Illinois softball student-athlete Sammy Marshall and the campus spotlight on Fort Wayne.
Summit League play resumes this weekend with all five teams in action … South Dakota State is scheduled to host North Dakota State (Friday) and Fort Wayne (Sunday) in doubleheaders … Omaha will also host Fort Wayne (Saturday) and Western Illinois (Sunday) in twinbills.
On the men’s side, Fort Wayne and Western Illinois head to the Bradley Invitational this weekend … On Monday and Tuesday, Denver is at the Redhawk Invitational, North Dakota State is participating in the Grub Mart Intercollegiate and Omaha and South Dakota State are at the Red Wolf Intercollegiate … In women’s action, Denver is at the Liz Murphey Intercollegiate while Western Illinois is at the Bradley Invitational … Meanwhile, North Dakota State, Omaha, South Dakota and South Dakota State are at the Kangaroo Invitational.
This weekend’s softball action has six teams competing in league play … North Dakota State puts its undefeated (2-0) league record to the test against third-place Omaha … Western Illinois hosts second-place Fort Wayne, as WIU’s Sammy Marshall (101) is two stolen bases away from becoming the all-time league leader in career steals (DePaul's Yvette Healy holds the record with 102) … South Dakota State welcomes IUPUI in its home opener … The league moved up one spot to 12th in the NCAA softball RPI this week with four teams in the top-100, Fort Wayne (56), North Dakota State (64), Omaha (96) and South Dakota (99) … Three teams and 10 players ranked in the NCAA top-30, including in the top-10 in 12 different categories and the nationally leader in two … Individually, two Summit League players are ranked in multiple categories … Western Illinois’ Sammy Marshall is ranked in the NCAA top-eight in five categories, including first in batting average (.543) for the second-straight week and first in runs per game (1.40), seventh in on-base percentage (.578) and stolen bases (0.83) and eighth in triples (4) … Fort Wayne’s Miranda Kramer is ranked in the top-10 in a trio of categories, fifth in strikeouts per seven innings (11.1), eighth in shutouts (7) and 10th in strikeouts (165).
Tennis / Women’s
This week’s men’s schedule begins with Denver (1-0 Summit League) at Western Illinois (0-4) and Fort Wayne (3-0) at Omaha (1-1) on April 4 … Men’s league play continues with South Dakota State (1-1) at Omaha on April 9 … Fort Wayne hosts the first women’s cluster of the season this weekend with No. 68 Denver, IUPUI, Omaha, South Dakota and Western Illinois joining the host Mastodons, Friday-Sunday.
Track & Field
Six teams are in action this weekend … Fort Wayne and IUPUI are at the Miami Invitational Friday and Saturday, while Omaha, South Dakota and South Dakota are at the Dakota Duals for a two-day meet … Summit Leaguers have combined for six times/marks ranked the NCAA top-30, including a pair in the top-10 … South Dakota State’s Mary Wirth is tied for seventh in the nation in the women's high jump with a school record height of 5'10.75" (1.80m) and South Dakota’s Jeff Mettler is eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:59.21.
