Inside The Summit

This week’s show highlights fall sports action, has an interview with Denver women’s soccer player Kristen Hamilton and features North Dakota State in the campus spotlight.
Fort Wayne is the lone team in action this weekend, competing at the Disney Cross Country Classic on Saturday … In the latest USTFCCCA Regional Rankings, the South Dakota State men held onto No. 10 in the Midwest Region, while IUPUI’s men’s team is No. 14 in the Great Lakes Region … On the women’s side in the Midwest Region, North Dakota State is ranked No. 12 and South Dakota is at No. 15.
Six men’s teams are in action this week with Denver, South Dakota State and Western Illinois all at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate ... On the women’s side, Denver is at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, while North Dakota State, Omaha, South Dakota and South Dakota State are all participating in the Payne Stewart Memorial.
Denver hosts IUPUI in a clash of league unbeaten teams Saturday … Other league games this weekend include Eastern Illinois at Fort Wayne and Western Illinois at Oral Roberts … WIU recorded a road victory at Bradley, a team that was ranked earlier this season … EIU features two of the league’s top three goal scorers (Garet Christianson and Jake Plant) and three of the top four in points (Christianson, Plant and Jake Brillhart) … IUPUI sophomore goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes collected his sixth career Defensive Player of the Week award earlier this week, the second-most in league history, which ties him for the second-highest total weekly awards on record (since 1995).
The initial NCAA RPI report was released and the league placed No. 18 and was led by South Dakota at No. 73 … The two undefeated (4-0) first-place teams, Denver and South Dakota, square off on Friday to highlight this weekend’s league matches … On Saturday, preseason co-favorites, Fort Wayne, the defending league tournament champion and IUPUI, the 2012 regular season champion, will face-off in a rematch of last year’s tournament championship match … Denver’s Brea Muhle moved up on spot to fourth in the NCAA in hitting percentage (.471), while South Dakota’s Kendall Kritenbrink broke into the top-10 in points per set at ninth (5.31 points per set) … A pair of Summit Leaguers are still ranked in the NCAA’s top five for active career leaders in kills per set, USD’s Kritenbrink is fourth (4.33 kills per set) and IPFW’s Emily Spencer is fifth (4.11 kills per set).
Denver is ranked No. 17 in this week’s NSCAA/Continental Tire National Poll and No. 13 in the NCAA RPI report … League teams are a combined 37-34-12 (.518) … Summit League teams are .500 or better vs. 11 of the 17 conferences in which they have competed against this season … First place South Dakota State (2-0-0) entertains South Dakota and Omaha in Brookings as league play enters its second week … No. 17 Denver hosts its first Summit League matches against Western Illinois and IUPUI, while North Dakota State hosts Omaha and South Dakota … For the first time in over a month, Omaha will leave the state of Nebraska for a match (at North Dakota State, at South Dakota State) … IUPUI also plays a non-league contest vs. Indiana State Friday.
Five league teams begin their 2013-14 season this weekend … Denver hosts the Denver Relays and the Eastern Illinois women host Butler … South Dakota opens at Minnesota State, while South Dakota State opens its season with a tri-meet at North Dakota … The South Dakota State women will also welcome Omaha on Sunday.
