Scholar-Athlete Spotlight: Western Illinois

Each month, The Summit League will feature outstanding student-athlete performances from a selected institution as recognized by its Faculty Athletic Representative. The May installment of The Summit League Scholar-Athlete Spotlight features two student-athletes from Western Illinois.

Tierney Bottino, Softball
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Jr./Lockport, Ill.
Major: Biology
GPA:  3.433

Tierney has earned Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll selections in each of her first two seasons. After appearing in 14 games her freshman season, Bottino earned a starting sport her sophomore season, hitting .242 from the plate. The Lockport, Illinois native hit her first career home run against IUPUI on March 23, 2014. Now a junior, Bottino has hit two home runs this season, including her first career grand slam against Fort Wayne on March 30, 2015. Bottino is having a career-year during her junior campaign, hitting .338 with 19 RBIs and five doubles.

Bottino is currently third on the team in doubles and second on the team in RBIs. The junior has 10 multi-hit games in her career and seven career multi-RBI games as a Leatherneck. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Bottino joined her fellow teammates in organizing Dance Marathon at Western Illinois. The Lockport Township product is majoring in Biology, and maintains a 3.433 GPA.

Jacob Shain, Men’s Swimming & Diving
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Sr./Olathe, Kan.
Major: Construction Management
GPA: 3.956

Jacob Shain entered the Western Illinois swimming and diving record books at the 2015 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships with a 1:53.59 in the 200 individual medley. Shain is also in the top 10 in the 200 butterfly, sitting ninth on that list. The Olathe, Kansas native is a three-time Summit League Distinguished Scholar, and helped the men’s swimming and diving team earn the top GPA of any men’s program in the fall semester. Western Illinois also had the 16th highest GPA of all men’s Division I programs in the nation.

Shain bested his previous ‘Top 10’ time in the 200 individual medley at the 2015 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships. The senior has interned with an international construction company each of the past two summers, and has secured a job with that company, Kiewit Corporation. Shain entered his final semester with a 3.956 GPA while majoring in Construction Management.
