South Dakota State Wins Third-Straight Commissioner's Cup Award

ELMHURST, Ill. - South Dakota State claimed its third consecutive Summit League Commissioner’s Cup award, and fourth overall, following the 2014-15 academic year. The Jackrabbits totaled 98 points and also won both the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and the Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award. SDSU captured its third-straight men’s all-sports award while earning the women’s all-sports award for the second consecutive year.

South Dakota placed second in the Commissioner’s Cup standings with a total of 89 points. The next three teams followed each other by no more than 6.5 points as North Dakota State (82.5) finished third, IUPUI (77.5) placed fourth and Oral Roberts (74) came in fifth. Denver was sixth with 65.5 points followed by Western Illinois (45.5), Omaha (45) and Fort Wayne (41).

The Jackrabbits captured the men’s basketball and women’s soccer regular season titles and took second men’s cross country, women’s swimming & diving, women’s basketball and baseball. In all, the Jacks finished in the top-three in 16 of its 18 sponsored sports during the 2014-15 academic year.

South Dakota’s second-place finish was the highest in school history. The Coyotes collected titles in the sports of women’s cross country, men’s indoor track & field, women’s basketball and men’s golf. USD totaled 10 top-three finishes this season. North Dakota State took third place with five first-place finishes, while IUPUI placed fourth, which is tied for its highest in school history.

The Commissioner’s Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men’s and women’s athletic programs, while the All-Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men’s sports and women’s sports. The men’s award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women’s award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU’s athletic program from 1994-2001.
