October Athletes of the Month Release

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League has selected Western Illinois men’s soccer player Yves Dietrich (Floeha, Germany) as the Male Athlete of the Month and South Dakota State soccer player Diana Potterveld (Fort Collins, Colo.) as the Female Athlete of the Month for October.

Dietrich garners Athlete of the Month honors for the first time in his career after extending his shutout streak to six matches and achieving the nation’s longest active shutout streak at 586:18.  The senior opened the month blanking Fort Wayne (Oct. 4), Milwaukee (Oct. 7), Omaha (Oct. 11) and Eastern Illinois (Oct. 18).  During his shutout streak, he became the second player in league history to capture three consecutive Defensive Player of the Week awards.  On Oct. 21 at Darke, the net minder made a career-high 11 saves in the 1-1 tie.  The Capital One Academic All-District honoree helped the Leathernecks end October with a 4-0-2 record.  Dietrich allowed just two goals in 580:00 with a 0.31 goals against average and made 30 saves for a .938 save percentage.

Potterveld captures her second career Athlete of the Month award after leading the Jackrabbits to their second outright Summit League regular season title and fourth overall in program history.  The Fort Collins, Colo., native began the month with four-straight multi-point games in league play.  She tallied two points in the 2-1 wins over IUPUI (Oct. 4) and Western Illinois (Oct. 5), netting a goal vs. the Jaguars and a pair of assists against the Leathernecks.  In a 3-3 tie at Fort Wayne on Oct. 10, the junior recorded a goal and an assist.  The two-time Athlete of the Week, followed that up with her best performance of the month tallying two assists and a goal in the 3-0 shutout over Oral Roberts.  She also added an assist in the 2-0 shutout over Denver to clinch the regular season title and help South Dakota State end October with a 5-2-1 record.  For the month, she recorded 12 points, six assists and three goals, and produced 16 shots for a .188 shot percentage.  Potterveld, the Jacks first Capital One Academic All-District selection since 2010, ended the regular season with a league-best and school-record 11 assists, tying the fourth-most in a single season in Summit League history.
