Fall Commissioner's Cup Release
ELMHURST, Ill. - IUPUI leads the way in The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup standings following the fall season of the 2014-15 academic year with 29 points. The Jaguars are also first in the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award Standings and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award Standings.
Behind the Jaguars’ 29 total points, three teams are tied for second with 22 points in North Dakota State, South Dakota and South Dakota State. Denver is in fifth place with 20.5 points followed by Oral Roberts in sixth with 18 points. Omaha (15.5 points), Western Illinois (14 points) and Fort Wayne (12 points) round out the standings.
IUPUI sits atop the Commissioner’s Cup standings after capturing the men’s cross country and volleyball regular season titles and finishing second in women’s soccer. North Dakota State, South Dakota and South Dakota State all tied for second place in the standings.
The Bison placed second in the women’s cross country race and fourth in the women’s soccer standings. Meanwhile, the Coyotes were first in women’s cross country and third in both men’s cross country and volleyball. The Jackrabbits earned a league title in women’s soccer, while placing second in men’s cross country and third on the women’s side.
The Commissioner’s Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men’s and women’s athletic programs, while the All-Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men’s sports and women’s sports. The men’s award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women’s award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU’s athletic program from 1994-2001.
