South Dakota State Captures Third-Straight Summit League Food Fight Title

ELMHURST, Ill. – South Dakota State University captured The Summit League’s 2014-15 “Food Fight” title by raising over 34,600 pounds of food, increasing its total from last year by over 9,000 lbs. The Summit League designated 18 "Food Fight" games during the basketball season and collected donations at the basketball championships with the nine league member institutions combining to raise over 84,000 lbs.

South Dakota State’s final winning total of 34,681.07 lbs., the largest amount by an individual school in any year, was donated to the Brookings Area Food Pantry. This marks the Jackrabbits third-consecutive title and league-best fourth overall of the seven-year league-wide food drive after also capturing the title in 2009-10.

South Dakota finished second and collected 13,485.08 lbs., a 3,572.07-lb. increase 2014, followed by Western Illinois in third-place with 8,102 lbs., who increased their amount by 7,192 lbs. from last year. Each of the top three schools increased their total by more than 3,500 lbs. from last year. Four institutions (NDSU, SDSU, USD, WIU) increased their totals by over a thousand pounds from 2014.

A total of nine men's basketball games and nine women's games were selected for the "Food Fight" initiative with host schools having exactly one week per game to collect food and/or cash donations.

For the fifth-straight year, The Summit League “Food Fight” was extended to include the 2015 Summit League Basketball Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D.  Feeding South Dakota teamed up with the league to help collect 7,222.80 lbs., the highest total in the five years at the basketball championships. All donations went to the Sioux Falls Food Pantry. This is the first year that every school raised at least 1,400 lbs., including seven institutions that raised over 3,000 lbs. of food.

In the program’s seven years, over 357,000 lbs. of food has been collected for Summit League communities and their local food banks.
