ORU's Schlehuber Named League Player of the Year
ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Summit League's regular season champion and top seed in the tournament, Oral Roberts, led the league with eight selections to the baseball all-league teams announced on Wednesday, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
Oral Roberts' Jared Schlehuber captured the Player of the Year award, while ORU's Drew Bowen was named Pitcher of the Year and Jose Trevino was selected as the Newcomer of the Year. Oakland's John Musachio earned the Coach of the Year award.
Schlehuber earns the Player of the Year award after helping Oral Roberts to its 14th-straight Summit League regular season championship. The senior first baseman leads the league with 12 home runs and 52 RBI on the year and is second in slugging percentage (.584). His .325 batting average is first on the Golden Eagles' squad while his .373 average against Summit League opponents ranks him third in the league. In 238 plate appearances, Schlehuber had only 25 strikeouts with 31 base on balls. The Aurora, Colo., native has also scored 40 runs, had 15 doubles and a .418 on-base percentage.
Bowen collectes Pitcher of the Year honors after recording a 1.78 ERA in league contests and a 5-2 overall record this season in 11 games. In his 70.1 innings pitched, the junior right hander collected 58 strikeouts against 18 base on balls and allowed just 17 earned runs and just six in league play. League opponents had a .215 batting average against Bowen and he averaged eight strikeouts per nine innings. A three-time Pitcher of the Week, Bowen also registered four complete games on the year and two shutouts.
In his freshman campaign, Trevino has set a new Oral Roberts freshman home run record with 12 on the year, which leads the league. The Corpus Christi, Texas, native also leads the league in total bases (126) and slugging percentage (.594) this season. A Player of the Week selection on May 21, Trevino is second in The Summit League in RBI (50) and doubles (16) and has started all 55 games. He leads the Golden Eagles with three triples and has scored 39 times.
Musachio captures his first Coach of the Year award after guiding the Golden Grizzlies to a second-place finish with a 15-6 league record. The finish equalled the program's second-place showing in 2000 for the best in program history. Oakland led the way with a team batting average of .321 in league games and was third in pitching with a team ERA of 3.81. Musachio becomes the first OU head coach to win Coach of the Year honors.
The Summit League Championship presented by Currington Mortgage begins Thursday, in Tulsa, Okla., with No. 2 Oakland facing No. 3 North Dakota State at 3:30 p.m., followed by host and top seed Oral Roberts vs. No. 4 Southern Utah at 7 p.m. The double elimination tournament continues with three games on Friday and the championship game(s) slated for Saturday.
