GREENSBORO, N.C. (oruathletics.com) – Miguel Ausua and Matt Whatley represented the Oral Roberts baseball team on the 2017 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Midwest Region teams.
Ausua was one of three starting pitchers named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team following an impressive first season with the Golden Eagles. The Peñuelas, Puerto Rico, native ranked third in the country posting 11 wins in 16 appearances on the mound posting a minuscule 1.65 earned run average, which was the seventh-lowest in the NCAA. The left hander was named Summit League Pitcher of the Year, a First Team All-Summit League selection and Summit League Championship MVP in 2017 behind a complete-game shutout in the tournament-clinching win over North Dakota State.
Whatley, a third-round draft pick of the Texas Rangers and finalist for the 2017 Johnny Bench Award, was honored as a second-team all-region selection for the third-consecutive year. The junior started all 59 games this season and threw out 43 percent of potential base stealers from behind the plate. He posted a .302 batting average with 22 extra-base hits, 49 RBI and drew 50 walks, the most in a single season for a Golden Eagle since Ben Petralli in 2008.
As a first-team selection, Ausua is eligible for ABCA/Rawlings All-America consideration and voting, which will be announced Saturday, June 17. The ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Team finalists will be announced on Twitter on Monday, June 19, and the Gold Glove winners will be announced on Wednesday, June 21.
The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its more than 8,000 members represent all 50 states and 25 countries.
