DU’s Newlove, USD’s Vining Named October Golfers of the Month

ELMHURST, Ill. – Denver's Sophie Newlove and South Dakota's Tommy Vining were honored Wednesday as the Summit League's Golfers of the Month for their efforts on the course during October.

Newlove recorded six rounds for the Pioneers in October, logging an average round score of 71.17. Her best showing came at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, where she tied her career-best 18-hole score twice (69) and turned in a career-best 54-hole total (7-under 209)—a tournament score that ties for third on Denver's all-time list. The individual winner at Ron Moore in 2016, Newlove finished in a tie for fourth this time around.

The junior from England followed up that Top-10 finish with a 15th-place showing at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational, penciling in a 2-over 218 score.

Vining—the September Golfer of the Month—continued to impress during the month of October, averaging a round score of 71.44 in nine rounds played. The junior from Sioux Falls posted a third-place score of 4-over 217 at the Zach Johnson Invitational, followed by a tie for 16th at the UMKC Bill Ross Intercollegiate (6-over 222).

Vining's best performance was his final of the fall, finishing one stroke shy of first-place at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invite and placing second overall in a field that included 111 golfers and two Top-30 golf programs (No. 19 Santa Clara and No. 32 BYU). Last year's Summit League Newcomer of the Year ended the weekend with a runner-up score of 12-under 204, including a 5-under 66 final round that ties for the fourth best single-round score in USD history.
