Summit League Announces Men’s Basketball Academic All-League Team

ELMHURST, Ill. – Six men's basketball players were selected to the 2013-14 Summit League Academic All-League Team as voted by the Faculty Athletic Representatives and Sports Information Directors of the league's eight member institutions. Student-athletes were chosen for the honor based on their academic and athletic performances this season.

The league's two Capital One Academic All-America selections, South Dakota State's Brayden Carlson and forward Jordan Dykstra, led the way. Joining the duo as an Academic All-League selection for the second consecutive season was Omaha's John Karhoff.

Also honored were Chris Kading from league regular season and tournament champion North Dakota State, South Dakota's Brandon Bos and SDSU's Marcus Heemstra.

Carlson, who has a 3.94 GPA is economics, started all 32 games and averaged 14.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest this season. His classroom work earned him first team Capital One Academic All-America honors while his on-court performance earned second team All-Summit League recognition.

Dykstra, with a 3.714 GPA in biology/pre-dentistry, led The Summit League in rebounding (7.6 per game) and ranked second in scoring (16 ppg) while earning first team all-league honors. He was named to the Senior CLASS Award All-America team and was a second team Capital One Academic All-American.

Karhoff, who has a 3.63 GPA while studying journalism, physical education and marketing, averaged 13.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

Kading, with a 3.80 GPA in exercise science and Spanish, played in all 33 games this season, shooting 49.3 percent from the field and 85 percent at the free throw line.

Bos, who has a 3.474 GPA in sport management, led his team in scoring with 11.9 points per game and ranked second in The Summit League with an 86.3 free throw percentage.

Heemstra, with a 3.748 GPA in math, appeared in all 32 games with seven starts while averaging 5.1 points and 3.3 rebounds in 16.6 minutes per game.

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions.
