DENVER, Colo. - The 2014 Summit League Tennis Championships begin Friday at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver. For the first time in league history, all teams will compete at the championships. Women's first round matches open the tournament at 10 a.m. (MST) before the men get underway at 2 p.m.

Friday's women's quarterfinals feature No. 3 seed Fort Wayne against No. 6 Western Illinois and No. 4 seed South Dakota vs. No. 5 IUPUI. Saturday's semifinals pit regular season champion and top-seeded Denver, ranked No. 69 in the latest ITA rankings, against the South Dakota-IUPUI winner and No. 2 seed South Dakota State vs. the Fort Wayne-Western Illinois winner. The winners of Saturday's matches will meet Sunday at 10 a.m. for the women's championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Men's quarterfinal play begins Friday with No. 4 seed IUPUI against No. 5 seed Western Illinois. The winner of that match moves on to meet regular season champion and top-seed Denver in Saturday's semifinal. The other semifinal pits No. 2 Fort Wayne against No. 3 South Dakota State. Saturday's winners meet Sunday at 1 p.m. for the men's championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The host Pioneers enter the tournament with a No. 69 ITA ranking … DU has won 10 of its last 12 matches … Denver won five of its six Summit League matches by a 7-0 score and outscored league opponents 41-1 on the season … A trio of Pioneers – Charlotte Derbyshire (No. 5-6 singles), Sonja Radosevic (No. 2-4) and Evy Van Genechten (No. 4-5) – tied for the league-lead with 6-0 records … Natalie Dunn (No. 6), Kathryn Hughes (No. 3), Caroline Schnell (No. 2) and Maureen Slattery (No. 1) each led or tied for the lead for best record at their singles positions … Denver went a combined 17-1 in Summit League doubles matches.

The Jackrabbits equaled the school record with five Summit League victories and recorded their best league finish in history … SDSU enters the tournament having won eight of its last nine matches and is 13-2 in its last 15 contests … Tacy Haws-Lay posted the Jacks best league record with a 5-1 mark at No. 6 singles … Haws-Lay and Ffion Davies along with Iasmin Rosa and Beatriz Souza each posted 5-1 doubles records in league play.

#3 Seed Fort Wayne (16-9 overall, 4-2 Summit League)

The defending champion Mastodons have won three of the last four Summit League Tournament titles … Mayu Sato was the only Summit League player to win all six matches at No. 1 singles … Sato tied for the league lead in victories with a 6-0 record … Marcy Huck went 5-1 in league play at No. 5 singles … Ella Norgren and Carlota Trevino posted a team-best 5-1 league doubles record at the No. 3 position.

The Coyotes enter the tournament having won three of their last four matches, including two of the last three Summit League matches … Milica Pavlovic (No. 2 singles) and Yuliya Sidenko (No. 3) lead USD with 4-2 league singles records.
