Western Illinois’ Marshall Crowned NCAA Stolen Base Champion
ELMHURST, Ill. – Western Illinois' Sammy Marshall won the NCAA stolen base crown with 1.18 steals per game this season, marking the fourth softball player in Summit League history and first since 2006 to capture an NCAA statistical title. Her NCAA statistical title marks the second by a league student-athlete this year as Oakland's Reggie Hamilton won the NCAA men's basketball scoring crown.
The Naperville, Ill., native, a first team All-League selection, was perfect on the base path swiping a league and school record 45 bases this season. Marshall was one of the five student-athletes ranked in stolen bases to be perfect on the season and the only one in the top-40 to do so.
The freshman led her team with a league-best .420 batting average and 38 runs scored which was fifth in the league. She also finished the year second for the Fighting Leathernecks and eighth in the league with 55 hits.
