Postseason Notebook W/ Stats

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Summit League Championships have come and gone, which means all that is left is for the madness of march to begin. South Dakota State, South Dakota and Denver each earned trips to postseason tournaments. SDSU and USD will be competing in the NCAA Tournament while Denver will be competing in the WNIT.

Tournament Notes

Denver

• Denver earned a bid into the WNIT and will take on New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. on Thursday, March 21 at 8 p.m. CT

• Denver is making its second appearance in the WNIT. They last made the WNIT in 2012

• The Pioneers has an 0-1 WNIT record. In 2012 they lost to Florida International 67-59 in Hot Springs, Arkansas

• DU's offense is one of the best in the country, averaging a blistering 80.6 points per game (ninth in the NCAA) while shooting 39.2 percent from downtown (third in the NCAA)

• New Mexico holds opponents to just 36.6 percent from the floor (38th in the nation) and 28.9 percent from 3-point range (52nd in the NCAA)

South Dakota

• South Dakota earned the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will battle No. 9 seed Clemson on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m. CT in Starkvegas, Miss. If they win the Yotes will play either No. 1 Mississippi State or No. 16 Southern University on Sunday, March 24

• USD earned the second at-large berth in Summit League history. They joined Northern Illinois who earned an at-large berth in 1994

• South Dakota is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. They last made it in 2014 as a No. 15 seed

• USD has a 0-1 record in the NCAA Tournament. The Yotes lost to No. Stanford 81-62 in Ames, Iowa. The Cardinals ended up reaching the Final Four that year

• The Coyotes are led by first-team all-Summit League guards Allison Arens and Ciara Duffy. Duffy has led the Coyotes in scoring for nearly half the games this season, averaging nearly 15 points per game on the year

 • Clemson will be making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002. They are led by first-year head coach, and ACC Coach of the Year, Amanda Butler

• Junior Kobi Thornton was named second-team All-ACC after averaging 14.6 points and securing 7.3 rebounds per game, both team highs for the Tigers

• This will be the two programs first meeting

• Six NCAA Tournament teams were on South Dakota's 2018-19 schedule and the Coyotes have wins over four of them (South Dakota State, Iowa State, Missouri, Missouri State)

South Dakota State

• South Dakota State earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will battle No. 11 Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. CT in Syracuse, N.Y. If they win the Jacks will play either No. 3 Syracuse or No. 14 Fordham on Monday, March 25

• South Dakota State is making its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years. It missed the 2014 and 2017 tournaments

• SDSU has a 2-8 record in the NCAA Tournament. The Jacks reached the round of 32 in the 2016 tournament with a 74-71 win over No. 5 seed and 19th-ranked Miami and in the 2009 tournament with a 90-55 win over 10th-seeded TCU

• The Jackrabbits are one of three teams—Baylor and UConn—in the NCAA Tournament which have had automatic bids in nine of 11 years

• SDSU is one of 22 non-power five teams who have won two-or-more NCAA Tournament games since 2009

• South Dakota State is the only Division I program to have its football, men's basketball and women's basketball teams reach postseason the last seven years
