Denver’s Summers, Omaha’s Gallegos awarded tennis weekly accolades

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Denver men's tennis athlete Matt Summers and Omaha women's tennis athlete Madison Gallegos took home this week's Summit League athlete of the week awards after solid performances during their respective team's matches. This is the second career weekly honor for Summers, while this is Gallegos' first. 

Gallegos helped the Mavericks defeat Northern Iowa, 5-2, in its season opener in Des Moines, Iowa. At the No. 1 spot in doubles, Gallegos and her teammate, Ines Absisan, won the first match with a 6-2 score. In singles play, she defeated Emma Carr 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.

The following day against Iowa State, the Mavericks fell 7-0, however, Gallegos took her singles match to three sets as the Aurora, Colo., native fought hard in the second set, winning 6-4, before falling in the final set.

On the men's side, Summers won all three of his singles and doubles matches over the weekend. In the Pioneers' 7-0 win against Bryant, Summers and his doubles partner secured a 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot. He then clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 straight sets win at the top spot.

The Pioneers would win another 7-0 home match the following day, this time against Metro State. In that match, Summers and teammate James Davis shined, winning 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. He then won a convincing match in singles play at the top spot with a 6-2, 6-1 final.

In his final match of the weekend against Weber State, he and his doubles partner defeated their opponents 6-1 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. During singles action, the Pioneers already clinched the match, but Summers' match went on as scheduled, defeating his opponent 6-4, 3-6, 1-0.
