SDSU Men and NDSU Women Favored to Repeat as Summit League Cross Country Champions

ELMHURST, Ill. – Reigning Summit League Cross Country Champions, the South Dakota State men and the North Dakota State women, were selected the preseason favorites to repeat as the 2013 Summit League Cross Country Champions in a vote of the league's head coaches.

Atop of the men's poll was South Dakota State with five first-place votes.  The Jackrabbit squad is led by the all-league trio of Trent Lusignan, Joel Reichow and Anthony Bongard, an all-league honoree in 2010.  After finishing runner-up in its first championship last year, South Dakota was picked second with the final first-place tally.  The Coyotes also return a pair of all-league runners in Jeff Mettler and Mubarik Musa, the 2012 Newcomer of the Championship.

IUPUI was third in the poll and welcomes back second team all-league honoree Sam RoudebushWestern Illinois edged out North Dakota State by one point for fourth and Fort Wayne came in sixth.  The Leathernecks are led by all-league selections Michael Castel and Chase Marlow.

On the women's side, two-time league champion North Dakota State, claimed the top spot with six first-place votes.  The Bison return a league-high four all-league honorees in first team selections Brecca Wahlund, Heidi Peterson and Maddie McClellan and second team member Abbi Aspengren.  Wahlund was the runner-up at the 2012 Summit League Championships and earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honors after a 14th-place finish the NCAA Midwest Regional.

South Dakota was picked second with the final first-place vote after finishing second in its first league championship last year, while South Dakota State came in a close third.  The Coyotes welcome back a trio of all-league runners in Megan Hilson, Amber Eickhorn, the 2012 Newcomer of the Championship, and Katie Wetzstein

Omaha was picked fourth followed by IUPUI and Western Illinois in a tie for fifth and Fort Wayne in seventh. 

The regular season begins Aug. 30 as six league teams begin competition. The season culminates with The Summit League Cross Country Championships at the Hefner Complex in Fort Wayne, Ind., Nov. 2.
