ELMHURST, Ill. – Western Illinois men's basketball player Garret Covington has been named President of The Summit League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for the 2016-17 academic year. Omaha tennis player Alex Woodward was selected as vice president and Denver tennis player Gracia Mboko was named secretary in a vote of their peers.
The trio was elected during the annual SAAC meetings July 22-24 held at the league office in Elmhurst, Ill., and will serve as the executive committee for the upcoming school year. The committee's responsibilities will include leading the league SAAC meetings along with overseeing the execution of the year's SAAC agenda.
Covington, who also serves as the league's National SAAC representative, enters his senior year at Western Illinois. The 6-5 guard has been named second team All-Summit League each of the last three seasons along with being named league Newcomer of the Year after his freshman season. In 2015-16, he led his team in scoring, averaging 17.9 points a game.
Woodward finished his freshman season at Omaha with an 8-15 singles record, tying the school record for singles wins in a season, playing anywhere from the No. 1 position to the No. 4 spot. He also posted a 10-14 doubles record among all three positions.
Mboko posted a 5-1 overall singles record and 4-2 doubles record during her sophomore season. She helped the Pioneers claim their third consecutive regular-season and tournament titles.
