Denver’s Shinyashiki, South Dakota State’s Smither Named October Athletes of the Month
ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League has selected Denver soccer player Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) as the Male Athlete of the Month and South Dakota State soccer player Maggie Smither (Sioux Falls, S.D.) as the Female Athlete of the Month for October.
Shinyashiki earns his second career Athlete of the Month honor after snagging three Summit League Offensive Player of the Week awards in October. The junior forward scored six of Denver's nine goals last month, including two game-winning goals and two game-tying goals. Additionally, he assisted on Denver's game-winning goal against Eastern Illinois. His offensive efforts have propelled his team to a undefeated league season, regular season Summit League title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament. The Sao Paulo native currently ranks first in the League in goals (nine) and points (22).
Smither also collects her second Athlete of the Month award after posting six shutouts and leading her squad to a 7-0 record in the month of October. The sophomore goalkeeper did not allow a goal in the final 556 minutes of game action in the month. Her efforts guided her team to a regular season title and No. 1 seed in The Summit League Tournament. The Jackrabbits posted a nine-game win streak and 11-game unbeaten streak, largely thanks to the work of Smither. The Sioux Falls native tallied 25 saves and posted a record-low 0.15 goals against average in league play. Her career goals against average of 0.66 ranks first in Summit League history.
Coincidentally, Shinyashiki and Smither both earned the November 2016 Athlete of the Month honors.
