South Dakota State Claims Second Summit League Food Fight Title

ELMHURST, Ill. – South Dakota State University claimed The Summit League’s 2012-13 “Food Fight’ title by raising over 22,500 pounds of food, increasing its total from last year by over 5,000 lbs.  The Summit League designated 18 "Food Fight" games during the basketball season and collected donations at the basketball championships with the nine league member institutions combining to raise over 65,680 lbs.

Each of the top-four finishers in this year’s “Food Fight” increased their totals by at least 3,900 lbs. from a year ago.

South Dakota State’s final winning total of 22,545.74 lbs. was donated to the Brookings Area Food Pantry.  This marks the Jackrabbits second title of the five-year league-wide food drive after capturing the title in 2009-10 and finishing second last year.

Oakland, a two-time “Food Fight” champion, finished second and collected 11,528.50 lbs., which is over 3,900 lbs. more than from last year.  Western Illinois came in third-place with 8,797.00 lbs. and Fort Wayne took fourth with 8,441.90 lbs. The Leathernecks had an increase over 5,500 lbs. from a year ago, while the Mastodons posted a league-best increase of over 8,000 lbs.

A total of nine men's basketball games and nine women's games were selected for the "Food Fight" initiative with host schools having exactly one week to collect food and/or cash donations and two weeks if the date featured a men's and women's doubleheader.

In conjunction with this year’s “Food Fight” games, the league held its first-ever viral video challenge.  Each school was asked to create a viral video that depicts life as a student-athlete.  Fans were asked to vote for their favorite video on The Summit League’s YouTube Channel.  After a month of voting, fans picked South Dakota State as the winner (SDSU's winning viral video).  SDSU received $770 (equal to 2,002 lbs.) added to their final Food Fight total.

For the third-straight year, The Summit League “Food Fight” was extended to include the 2013 Summit League Basketball Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D.  Feeding South Dakota teamed up with the league to help collect 949.80 lbs. at the basketball championships with all donations going to the Sioux Falls Food Pantry.

In the program’s five years, over 199,240 lbs. of food has been collected.  This season alone, five schools surpassed the 6,000 lb. mark in donations for their local food banks.
