Each month, The Summit League will feature outstanding student-athlete performances from a selected institution as recognized by its Faculty Athletic Representative. The November installment of The Summit League Scholar-Athlete Spotlight features three student-athletes from Kansas City.
Korbin Kuehn, Men’s Golf
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Sr./Overland Park, Kan.
A first-team all-league performer, Kuehn is the top golfer for the Kangaroos. He ranked second in The Summit League in scoring average last year with a 72.72, which is second all-time in program history. The Overland Park, Kan., native was named the September league golfer of the month this fall and earned Summit League Golfer of the Week four times last season. He has a career low round of 66 and holds the school record with a three-round total of 205. As a sophomore he was a second-team All-League selection, while he won the individual title at the 2010 Summit League Championships. Kuehn is a Distinguished Scholar and has earned Academic All-League honors multiple times. He has volunteered for the Morning Glory Cafe' and Habitat for Humanity, among others with the golf team.
Ramon Nelson, Men’s Track & Field
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Sr./Linstead, St. Catherine, Jamaica
Major: Environmental Science
Nelson, a record-setting thrower for the men's track and field team, won the weight throw at four indoor events last season and has the second-longest throw in school history at 58’10.25”. He was the silver medalist at the 2011 Summit League Indoor Championships in that event. He recorded the second-best shot-put in school history during the outdoor season at 53’1.75”, taking three top-five finishes. In the hammer throw, the senior finished in the top three on three separate occasions. Nelson is a three-time honoree of the Academic All-League team and is a member of the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. He is also involved in Kansas City’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), as well as several community service projects with the track and field team.
Sarah Shaughnessy, Kansas City
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Jr./Overland Park, Kan.
Shaughnessy, a starting defender for the Kansas City women's soccer team, was named to The Summit League All-Freshmen squad in 2010. She has played in every match of her career while at Kansas City and ranks second on the team in minutes this season. She has 49 starts to her credit, while helping the team to its first ever appearance in The Summit League tournament as a sophomore. Shaughnessy is a member of the Academic All-League and Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. Off the field, she is a representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She has participated in several community service projects, including Morning Glory Café, Habitat for Humanity and Center Middle School. Her team is dedicated to holistic wellness and has completed several workshops on test anxiety as well as being involved in nutrition workshops.
