Each month, The Summit League will feature outstanding student-athlete performances from a selected institution as recognized by its Faculty Athletic Representative. The January installment of The Summit League Scholar-Athlete Spotlight features three student-athletes from Omaha.
Allie Mathewson, Softball
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Jr./Papillion, Neb.
Major: Exercise Science
Enters her junior season after garnering NFCA All-Midwest Region First Team honors and posting a perfect 4.0 GPA in her first year at UNO to earn a spot on the Chancellor’s List…was an All-Summit League First Team pick in 2013 after leading the Mavericks with a .395 batting average with 11 home runs, 36 RBIs and a team-high 44 runs scored…tied for second nationally with seven triples and had a league-best .763 slugging percentage…started every game in center field and committed no errors...led the Mavs with 20 multi-hit games, including four three-hit performances and two multi-homer games...put together a team-best 11 game hitting streak to end the season…majoring in exercise science and has a cumulative 4.0 GPA.
Sami Spenner, Track & Field
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Sr./Columbus, Neb.
Major: Exercise Science
Enters senior season after one of the finest seasons, indoor and outdoor, in the history of Omaha track & field in 2012-13…indoors, set two school records, was named the Summit League’s Field Athlete of the Year, the league’s Field Championship MVP, a member of the All-League Team and was the Summit League female track & field athlete of the week a record six times…accounted for 40 points at the Summit League Championship while winning the pentathlon, long jump and triple jump and competing in two other events (high jump, 60 m hurdles) and both relays… outdoors, set three school records, was again the Summit League’s Field Championship MVP, a member of the All-League Team and earned another Summit female track & field athlete of the week award…earned 49 points at the Summit League Championship, winning the heptathlon, long jump and triple jump while also competing in the 100 and 200 meter dashes (both second-place finishes), high jump (sixth) and both relays…also a member of the Summit League’s Academic All-League Team for both the indoor and outdoor seasons…majoring in exercise science with a cumulative 3.7 GPA.
John Karhoff, Men's Basketball
Eligibility Year/Hometown: Sr./Omaha, Neb.
In his senior season, has already surpassed the 1,000 career points milestone just nine games in...Earned first-team Academic All-District honors and was an Academic All-Summit selection in 2013...First Academic All-Summit selection in Omaha men's basketball history...Member of the Summit League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll (2013) and the Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence (2012-13)...Named to the NABC Honors Court (2012-13)...Leads the Summit League with a .947 free throw percentage in 2013-14...Four-year started who has started all but six of his 96 career games through Dec. 6...Omaha's active career leader in points scored, rebounds, field goals made, free throws made, games played, starts and minutes played...On track to record over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in his career...As a junior, averaged 12.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game...Member of the UNO Dean's List...Majoring in journalism with a minor in physical education and has a cumulative GPA of 3.66.
