ELMHURST, Ill. - The Summit League has named Denver men’s swimmer Kyle Milberg (Littleton, Colo.) as its Male Athlete of the Month and Omaha women’s track & field athlete Sami Spenner (Columbus, Neb.) and South Dakota track & field athlete Emily Grove (Pontiac, Ill.) as the Female Athletes of the Month for February.
Milberg earns the Male Athlete of the Month award for the first time in his career after being named the Swimming Championship MVP during the month. The senior recorded three individual first-place finishes and was a part of two first place Pioneer relay teams at The Summit League Championships. Individually, Milberg took first place in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 48.02 and had the same time in the finals of the 100-meter backstroke. He also placed first in the 200-meter backstroke, hitting the wall in 1:43.84. Milberg was also part of the first place 200 medley relay (1:28.17) team and 400-meter freestyle relay (3:00.36) squads. He earned NCAA ‘B’ Cut times in the 100 back, 200 back, 100 fly and 400 free relay while being named to The Summit League’s All-League Team.
Spenner earns her fourth career Athlete of the Month award after setting three new school records at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The senior also set the American Collegiate Record in the pentathlon with 4,498 points, finishing runner-up to Olympian Sharon Day-Monroe. Her score of 4,498 points ranks sixth all-time and she finished the month with eight first-place finishes, including three at The Summit League Championships where she accounted for 60 of the Maverick’s 109 points. She also set the school records in the long jump (20’ 09.75”/6.34m) and 60-meter hurdles (8.52) and earned All-Summit League honors.
Grove collects her first career Athlete of the Month honor after setting the top pole vault mark in the nation at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships last month. The junior finished sixth at the meet with a height of 14’ 9.5” (4.50m). Grove also won the pole vault at The Summit League Championships with a mark of 14’ 1.75” (4.31m), the Iowa State Classic (14’ 4.00”/4.36m) and the Bill Bergan Invitational (14’ 3.25”/4.34m). During the month, Grove was twice named the Athlete of the Week and earned All-Summit League honors.
