ELMHURST, Ill. - Through the 2013-14 winter season, South Dakota State has surged into the lead in the race for The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup with 50.5 points. The Jackrabbits also hold the top spot in both the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and the Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award standings.
South Dakota State has 50.5 points and took over sole possession of first place after the winter season. The next four teams are separated by a mere 2.5 points. South Dakota is in second with 41.5 points followed by North Dakota State (39.5 points) with Denver and IUPUI tied for fourth with 39.0 points each. Fort Wayne is in sixth place with 30.0 points while Western Illinois (28.0 points) and Omaha (19.5 points) round out the rankings.
The Jackrabbits sit atop the Commissioner’s Cup and the Men’s and Women’s All-Sports standings after top-three finishes in eight of their 10 eligible sports, including first-place finishes in men’s cross country and women’s basketball. South Dakota has five top-three finishes, including taking the top spot in men’s indoor track & field.
Denver has earned a league-best four first-place finishes among its seven eligible sports while North Dakota State has taken first in three sports (women’s cross country, women’s indoor track & field, men’s basketball).
The Commissioner’s Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men’s and women’s athletic programs, while the All-Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men’s sports and women’s sports. The men’s award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women’s award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU’s athletic program from 1994-2001.
