South Dakota State Captures Second-Straight Summit League Food Fight Title

ELMHURST, Ill. – South Dakota State University captured The Summit League’s 2013-14 “Food Fight” title by raising over 25,300 pounds of food, increasing its total from last year by over 2,800 lbs.  The Summit League designated 16 "Food Fight" games during the basketball season and collected donations at the basketball championships with the eight league member institutions combining to raise over 58,800 lbs.

Each of the top-four finishers in this year’s “Food Fight” increased their totals by at least 2,500 lbs. from a year ago.

South Dakota State’s final winning total of 25,347.46 lbs., the largest amount by an individual school since 2012 (Southern Utah – 23,208.20), was donated to the Brookings Area Food Pantry.  This marks the Jackrabbits second consecutive title and league-best third overall of the six-year league-wide food drive after capturing the title last year and in 2009-10.

South Dakota finished second and collected 9,913.01 lbs., followed by IUPUI in third-place with 6,032 lbs. and Omaha in fourth collecting 4,693 lbs.  The Coyotes posted a league-best increase of more than 3,700 lbs. from a year ago, while the Mavericks tallied an increase of over 3,600 lbs.

A total of eight men's basketball games and eight women's games were selected for the "Food Fight" initiative with host schools having exactly one week per game to collect food and/or cash donations.

For the fourth-straight year, The Summit League “Food Fight” was extended to include the 2014 Summit League Basketball Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D.  Feeding South Dakota teamed up with the league to help collect 4,888.60 lbs., the highest total by more than 2,500 lbs. in the four years at the basketball championships.  All donations went to the Sioux Falls Food Pantry.

During this year’s Summit League Basketball Championships, fans that donated at least $10 or brought in at least 10 non-perishable items were eligible to enter a raffle to win two All-Session Tickets and two VIP Passes to the 2015 Summit League Basketball Tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.   Janet S. from Lees Summit, Mo., was this year’s "Food Fight" raffle winner.

In the program’s six years, over 278,000 lbs. of food has been collected for Summit League communities and their local food banks.
