This week’s show highlights fall sports action and includes a piece on South Dakota’s hot start to the volleyball season and the campus spotlight on Denver.
Three teams are competing this weekend … Fort Wayne and IUPUI are at the Indiana Intercollegiates on Friday … Omaha is in action at the Woody Greeno Invitational on Saturday … Three teams, two women’s and one men’s, are ranked in the USTFCCCA Regional top-15 … In the Midwest Region, North Dakota State women held on to the No. 6 spot while the South Dakota women moved up three spots to No. 12 … For the men, South Dakota State gained one spot in the rankings at No. 11 in the Midwest Region.
South Dakota State hosts the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational for the men and women teams with North Dakota State and South Dakota also competing … On the men’s side, Fort Wayne and IUPUI are at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate and Denver is at the Mark Simpson Invitational … The women’s schedule sees IUPUI at the Yale Intercollegiate, Fort Wayne, Omaha and Western Illinois at the SIUE Doubletree Intercollegiate and Denver at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
Fort Wayne takes on No. 25 Wisconsin Friday as part of the UIC Soccer Classic in Chicago … Eastern Illinois’ Jake Brillhart entered the week ranked ninth in the NCAA in assists per game (0.75) and 15th in total assists (three) … Both Fort Wayne’s Raphael Kotzock (15th) and Western Illinois’ Yves Dietrich (21st) entered the week ranked among the NCAA’s top 25 total saves leaders. Dietrich also ranked 25th in saves per game (5.00).
This marks the last weekend that all eight teams are in non-league tournament action as league play opens Sept. 27 … Highlighting this weekend’s action are two matches against ranked opponents and one against a team receiving votes in the AVCA Poll … South Dakota takes on both ranked opponents No. 7 Hawai’i and No. 23 Creighton at the Shocker Volleyball Classic … The Coyotes are on a four-match winning streak and have won eight of their last nine matches … Omaha faces Oklahoma (RV in the latest AVCA Poll) tonight at home, in the 2013 Nike Invitational … North Dakota State’s match against Kansas on Friday at noon CT will be broadcast live on ESPN3 (WatchESPN.com) … A pair of Summit Leaguers are ranked in the NCAA’s top five for active career leaders in kills per set, USD’s Kendall Kritenbrink is third (4.25 kills per set) and IPFW’s Emily Spencer is fourth (4.03 kills per set).
Entering Friday play, league teams are a combined 29-23-8 (.550) … Summit League teams have a winning record vs. 10 of the 17 conferences in which they have competed against this season … Denver is ranked No. 14 in this week’s NSCAA/Continental Tire National Poll, moving up two slots from the previous week … In the latest, NCAA statistics, DU (7-0-0) is just one of five teams with a perfect win-lost-tie percentage in the nation … Denver’s Kristen Hamilton is two points shy of breaking the school’s all-time scoring record … South Dakota State is on a three-match winning streak and is unbeaten in its last six contests while IUPUI is undefeated at home this season … Five of the eight league teams have a winning record this season.
