The Summit League began its “Countdown to Tip-Off” last Wednesday, which features previews of all 16 men’s and women’s squads - click here for the rundown … The regular season tips off Friday with four men’s games and seven women’s contests.
Summit League regular season play wraps up Saturday with three matches, two of which (Denver at Western Illinois and Oral Roberts at IUPUI) feature postseason implications … Denver has clinched the regular season title and No. 1 tournament seed … Oral Roberts, Western Illinois and IUPUI have clinched tournament berths and can each finish as the No. 2, 3 or 4 seed heading into the weekend … Denver’s Oliver Brown earned his third consecutive Defensive Player of the Week award, the most on record (since 1995), and enters the weekend without having allowed a goal in league play and owning a school-record 498-minute scoreless streak … The Pioneers are riding a Division I school record 11-match unbeaten streak and concurrent five-game win streak.
With two weekends left in league play, IUPUI and South Dakota are still tied atop the league each with a league record of 9-2 … Four teams, IUPUI, South Dakota, Denver and Fort Wayne have secured berths to The Summit League Championship … Co-preseason favorites IUPUI, the defending regular season league champion, and Fort Wayne, the 2012 Summit League tournament champion square off on Saturday … The Jaguars are on a six-match overall winning streak and nine-match winning streak in league play … Three players are ranked in the NCAA top-10, South Dakota’s Kendall Kritenbrink is fifth in points per set (5.41), while Denver’s Brea Muhle is seventh in the NCAA in hitting percentage (.456) and Fort Wayne’s Emily Spencer is eighth in kills per set (4.72) and seventh in points per set (5.31) … A pair of Summit Leaguers are still ranked in the NCAA’s top five for active career leaders, Fort Wayne’s Spencer is third in attempts per set (12.02) and USD’s Kritenbrink is fifth in kills per set (4.37).
The Women’s Soccer Championship begins Friday with a pair of semifinal matches … No. 1 Denver takes on host No. 4 Fort Wayne at 5 p.m. (ET) followed by No. 2 South Dakota State vs. No. 3 North Dakota State at 8 p.m. (ET) … The winners meet Sunday at Noon (ET) in the championship match for the right to represent The Summit League in the NCAA Tournament … Denver is ranked No. 14 this week in the NSCAA/Continental Tire National Poll and No. 13 in the NCAA RPI report … League teams are a combined 37-36-12 (.506) against non-league opposition this season … Summit League teams are .500 or better vs. 11 of the 17 conferences in which they have competed against this season … As a team, Denver is ranked in the top-10 in the nation in seven different statistical categories.
Four league teams are in action this weekend … IUPUI hosts Valparaiso and Butler on Friday and Wright State on Saturday … South Dakota welcomes league opponent South Dakota State on Friday and Eastern Illinois hosts Evansville on Saturday.
