Southern 83, South Dakota 79
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - Derick Beltran scored 17 points and Jameel Grace scored 16, including two free throws with 9 seconds to play, as Southern University defeated South Dakota 83-79 Wednesday night.
The game was part of the Global Sports Showcase at the University of Wyoming.
Javan Mitchell also scored 16 points and led the Jaguars (1-2) with eight rebounds. Malcolm Miller and Yondarius Johnson added 11 points each for Southern.
South Dakota's Trevor Gruis led all players with 23 points and nine rebounds. Karim Rowson scored 19 points for the Coyotes, who were playing their season opener.
SIUE 62, Western Illinois 50
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (goleathernecks.com) - The Western Illinois men's basketball team played its first road contest of the year Wednesday night (Nov. 14), and despite trailing by only three at the break, the Fighting Leathernecks (1-1) fell to the SIUE Cougars (1-1), 62-50.
Terell Parks and Ceola Clark III led Western in scoring with 18 and 15, respectively. Parks also finished with a game-high eight rebounds. Clark and Don McAvoy III each tallied three assists to lead the Leathernecks, while McAvoy also led the team in blocks with three.
Western had one more rebound in the game than the Cougars, 29-28.The Leathernecks finished with 19 turnovers to SIU-E's eight. The Cougars also had six more points off of the bench, 16-10. SIUE had only a slight advantage in points in the paint (26-24) and points off turnovers (17-16).
The Cougars shot better from the field (44.4% to 40%) and from beyond the arch (50% to 36.4%). Both team shot 70% from the charity stripe.
SIUE was led by Jerome Jones who led the Cougars in points with 26, finishing 10-of-15 from the field, and rebounds with 6.
Texas Tech 91, Omaha 63
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Jaye Crockett scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Texas Tech to a 91-63 win over Omaha on Wednesday night.
Crockett shot 9 of 12 from the field and was flawless from behind the 3-point mark and the free-throw line.Texas Tech blew a 13-point lead to go into halftime up by only six. After the half, Dejan Kravic and Crockett helped the Red Raiders break open a lead that would only grow.
Kravic added 20 points for the Red Raiders, with all but two of those coming in the second half.The Red Raiders (2-0) crashed the boards, out-rebounding the Mavericks (1-2) 48 to 27.
The Red Raiders pressed aggressively all game long, which translated into 10 steals and kept the Mavericks on their heels.
Justin Simmons led the Mavericks with 13 points, and John Karhoff added 11 points and four rebounds.
