Fort Wayne 90, Indiana-Kokomo 62
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (gomastodons.com) - The IPFW Mastodon men's basketball team evened its record with a lopsided 90-62 in over the IU-Kokomo Cougars on Monday evening in the Mastodons' home opener as part of the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Holiday Inn Downtown Marina Islanders Basketball Tournament.
Four players reached double figures, including 21 from Joe Reed and 20 from Michael Kibiloski, while Steve Forbes scored 14 and Joe Edwards 10. Mo Evans narrowly missed double-figures with nine, as IPFW out-scored its opponent 62-12 in the paint, and 20-4 on second-chance attempts.
Reed pulled down eight rebounds, just missing a double-double, as IPFW out-rebounded IU-Kokomo 37-to-27 in the game. Pierre Bland gave out eight assists, while Kevin Harden helped with four, helping propel the 'Dons to a 23-to-7 assist-to-turnover ratio. Isaiah McCray blocked a career-high three shots, as the Mastodons had eight blocked shots in all, as Edwards and Mo Evans each had three steals.
Canisius 71, South Dakota 66
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Billy Baron pumped in 27 points, 13 in the final 10 minutes, to help Canisius overcome South Dakota, 71-66, in its season-opening game Monday.
Baron's 3-pointer with less than a minute to play put the Golden Griffins ahead for good, 67-64, and he added a pair of clutch free throws with five seconds left to shut the door on the Coyotes.
Baron was just 6 of 15 from the floor, but was 5 of 9 on 3-pointers and 10 of 11 from the line. Jordan Heath added 12 points and Phil Valenti came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds.
Center Trevor Gruis led South Dakota with 18 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Bos added 13 points and Tyler Larson came off the bench to add 10.
South Dakota (0-2) trailed by two at halftime and led by two, 56-54, with 6:46 left.
