Evansville 84, IUPUI 78
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - D.J. Balentine scored 29 points for the second-straight game to lead Evansville over IUPUI 82-78 on Tuesday night.
Evansville (2-0) started a 7-0 run on two of Balentine's free throws with 3:26 left to break a 69-all tie and take the lead for good. Donovan Gibbs closed the lead to 76-72 with a layup at the 1:06 mark but the Aces hit all eight free throws in the final 40 seconds to seal the win.
Evansville was 28 of 31 from the charity stripe. Balentine hit all 12 of his free throws and his 29 points tied the career high he set on Nov. 9 in the season-opener against Martin Methodist.
Ian Chiles had 28 points, five rebounds, four 3-pointers and three assists for IUPUI (0-2).
The win was Evansville's first in a road-opener since 1999 and the loss was IUPUI's first in a home opener since the same year.
Nebraska 62, Western Illinois 47
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska's Walter Pitchford two of his three 3-pointers while leading the game-breaking run in the first half of the Cornhuskers' 62-47 victory over Western Illinois on Tuesday night.
Pitchford scored all 14 of his points in the first half to lead four Nebraska players in double figures, and the Huskers (2-0) had solid follow-up to their 24-point win over Florida Gulf Coast in last Friday's opener.
"I thought we had a hard time matching up with that team," Western Illinois head coach Jim Molinari said. "Our strength was Michael Ochereobia. He can score down low against Walter Pitchford. The weakness was that (Ochereobia) couldn't guard him on the floor."
Terran Petteway had 13 points and nine rebounds, Shavon Shields added 13 points and reserve Leslee Smith had 10 points, five rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot.
Tate Stensgaard scored 10 points and Ochereobia added eight points and eight rebounds for the Leathernecks (0-2).
Garret Covington, who scored 22 points in the Leathernecks' season-opening loss at Idaho, was held to five points on 2-of-11 shooting.
California 77, Denver 50
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Tyrone Wallace scored 16 points and David Kravish 15 in leading California to a 77-50 victory over Denver on Tuesday night.
Richard Solomon had 16 rebounds, nine points and two blocks for the Bears (2-0).
Cam Griffin led the Pioneers (0-1) with 15 points, and Marcus Byrd added 10. Chris Udofia and Brett Olson scored eight points apiece.
Kravish shot 7 for 12 from the field, mostly around the basket, while Wallace went 5 for 10.
Heralded freshman guard Jabari Bird made his first start for Cal.
The Pioneers, who averaged 7.9 3-point baskets per game last season, came out cold. They missed their first eight 3-point shots and 12 of their first 14 overall. The Bears made 10 of their first 13 shots -- missing their only 3-point try taken during that span -- and built a 24-5 lead as Solomon made a slam dunk with 7:40 left in the first half.
Griffin, who led the Pioneers with 10 first-half points, finally made Denver's first 3-point shot with 7:17 remaining in the half.
Udofia, a first-team All-Summit League pick and Denver's top returning scorer, had only three points in the first half.
