Fort Wayne 82, North Dakota State 71
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Luis Jacobo scored 20 points and Fort Wayne was near perfect from the free throw line in beating North Dakota State 82-71 in a Summit League conference opener for both schools on Thursday night.
Steve Forbes added 14 for Fort Wayne.
North Dakota State (11-5, 0-1 Summit) trailed Fort Wayne (13-5, 1-0) by as many as 15 points in the first half but narrowed the deficit to 38-31 at the break.
The Bison edged back to 62-59 with just over five minutes to play following a three point play by Lawrence Alexander. But that was as close as the Bison would get.
Fort Wayne made 12 of 12 free throws in the final three minutes to pull off the 11 point victory margin. The Mastodons were 20 of 21 from the penalty line for the night and shot 52 percent from the field.
Marshall Bjorklund led Bison scorers with 19 points.
South Dakota State 86, IUPUI 70
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Jordan Dykstra scored 26 points and Cody Larson added another 22 as South Dakota State opened Summit League play with an 86-70 win over IUPUI Thursday night.
Khufu Najee drilled a 3-pointer with 3:14 left to play to cut the South Dakota State lead to three, 73-70, but Dykstra answered with a layup with 2:55 left and was fouled by Donovan Gibbs with a technical foul tacked on. Dykstra stroked all three free throws to make it an eight-point lead and sparking a 13-0 run to close out the game.
The Jackrabbits (9-7, 1-0 Summit) got 19 points from Brayden Carlson and 10 more from Jake Bittle, who drilled a 3-pointer during the closing run.
Ian Chiles had 21 points to lead IUPUI (5-13, 0-1 Summit), with Najee and Mitch Patton adding 15 and 14 points, respectively. Marcellus Barksdale added another 10.
