Western Illinois’ Covington Named #SummitMBB Player of the Week

ELMHURST, Ill. – Western Illinois' Garret Covington was named The Summit League's Player of the Week following his performance Dec. 8-14.

Covington garnered his initial season honor and second career Player of the Week award after averaging 22.5 points while leading Western Illinois to a pair of victories. Against Idaho, Covington had a career-high six three-pointers and equaled the WIU record with six consecutive treys in a 27-point outburst. Two nights later against SWAC favorite Alabama State, Covington scored 18 points, including a trio of three-pointers, while added three assists and a pair of steals.

In its fourth decade of Division I athletics, The Summit League features men's basketball teams from nine member institutions: Denver, Fort Wayne, IUPUI, North Dakota State, Omaha, Oral Roberts, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Western Illinois. Over the past five seasons (2010-14), The Summit League owns the nation's highest RPI gain (+9). In 2013-14, The Summit League had three teams advance in national postseason tournaments, highlighted by an NCAA Tournament Round of 64 victory, recorded its third consecutive top-20 RPI finish, achieved an all-time high USA Today Sagarin rating, and saw a record 10 former players on NBA and D-League rosters.
