North Dakota State 61, Alcorn State 50
EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Dexter Werner scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds as North Dakota State defeated Alcorn State 61-50 on Monday night in the consolation game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.
Kory Brown added 12 points and Carlin Dupree 11 for the Bison (7-5). North Dakota State shot only 39.2 percent but that was still almost 10 percentage points better than Alcorn State at 29.8.
Marquis Vance had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Braves (1-10) with Reginald Johnson adding 10 points.
North Dakota State shot 44.8 percent in the first half in taking a 36-18 lead. But as the Bison cooled off, the Braves opened up the second half outscoring North Dakota State 19-8, with Juwan Henderson scoring all eight of his points to open the half. The run cut the Bison's lead to 44-37 with 13:17 left in the game, but the Braves didn't get any closer.
Missouri State 52, Oral Roberts 45
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Camyn Boone scored only six points but hit a pair of clutch buckets and Missouri State collared four defensive boards late to fend off an Oral Roberts upset bid 52-45 on Monday night.
The Bears (6-6) made up a 10-point gap in the second half to defeat the Golden Eagles (4-7) for the second time in a week, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Marcus Marshall led the Bears with 16 points — 4 of 14 from the field but 7 of 9 at the line. Loomis Gerring added 10 points.
Oral Roberts never trailed in the first half, leading 31-21 at intermission, but made only four field goals after. The Golden Eagles still closed to 46-45 until Boone hit a jumper. ORU missed five shots, including four 3-point attempts, with Missouri State vacuuming all the rebounds.
Boone dunked with 33 seconds left and Marshall closed it at the line.
Illinois State 68, Fort Wayne 43
NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Daishon Knight scored 12 points and Illinois State cruised past IPFW 68-43 on Monday.
Illinois State (7-4) ran out to a 9-1 lead after 3 ½ minutes — including a 3-pointer by Knight — and a 10-2 run midway through the half pushed the lead to double digits as the Redbirds built a 37-17 advantage at the break.
The lead reached 30 points six minutes into the second half after an 11-0 run and Illinois State cruised to the win.
Bobby Hunter added 11 points and MiKyle McIntosh had 10 points. Illinois State shot 46 percent from the floor, held a 42-35 advantage on the boards and blocked seven shots, including four by Reggie Lynch.
IPFW (6-5) was paced by Joe Reed's 12 points, the only Mastodon in double figures. They were just 12 of 42 (29 percent) from the floor and 2 of 14 from beyond the arc.
