Things to know heading into the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –The Summit League will have ten student-athletes representing the league at the 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships March 13-14 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The list of ten student-athletes includes five individuals that are veterans to the indoor national meet. The remaining five will be stepping onto the national stage for the first time in their respective careers.

The University of New Mexico will host the championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center. ESPN3 will stream the championships live starting at 7:15 p.m. ET March 13 and starting at 6 p.m. ET March 14. A re-air of the championships will take place starting at 9 p.m. ET Monday, March 16 on ESPNU.

Friday:
Akealy Moton | North Dakota State | Shot Put – Friday, March 13 (5 p.m. CT)

  • Finished runner-up in the shot put at the indoor league championships with a mark of 55-3 (16.84m)
  • Is marking her first appearance at the NCAA Championships after missing a trip last year by two spots
  • Ranks No. 4 headed into the competition with a season-best mark of 57-09.50 (17.61m)

Shelby Gunnells | North Dakota State | Shot Put – Friday, March 13 (5 p.m. CT)

  • Is making her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships
  • Won the shot put title at the league indoor championships with a mark of 55-07.50 (16.95m)
  • Enters the championships holding the eighth-best mark in the nation (57-.02.25, 17.43m)

Chris Nilsen | South Dakota | Pole Vault – Friday, March 13 (5:15 p.m. CT)

  • 2017 NCAA Indoor Champion in the pole vault
  • 2018, 2019 NCAA indoor pole vault runner-up
  • Broke the NCAA indoor pole vault record earlier this season with a vault of 19-05.50 (5.93m)
  • Captured the Summit League title in the vault at the indoor championship with a mark of 18-1 (5.51m)

Ethan Bray | South Dakota | Pole Vault – Friday, March 13 (5:15 p.m. CT)

  • Holds the ninth-best mark in the competition with a mark of 18-1 (5.51m)
  • Finished runner-up at the league indoor championships with a vault of 17-5 (5.31m)
  • Will be making his first indoor NCAA Championships appearance

Brithton Senior | South Dakota | Hurdles – Semifinals, Friday, March 13 (6:40 p.m. CT)

  • Is making his first appearance at the NCAA Championships
  • Clocked a 7.74 in the 60m hurdles to win the event at the indoor league championships
  • Broke the Summit League Championships meet record and the program record with the time

Alex Talley | North Dakota State | Shot Put & Weight Throw – Friday, March 13 (7:05 p.m.) & Saturday, March 14 (2 p.m. CT)

  • Is making his first appearance at the indoor NCAA Championships
  • Was runner-up at the league indoor championships with a personal-best throw of 64-02.50 (19.57m)
  • Was named Most Outstanding Performer of the league championship after launch a throw of 73-11.50 (22.54m) in the weight throw to claim the title
  • Enters the championships ranked No. 5 in the weight throw and No. 15 in the shot put

Kristoffer Thomsen | North Dakota State | Shot Put – Friday, March 13 (7:05 p.m. CT)

  • Won the shot put at the league indoor championships with a career-best mark of 66-08.50 (20.33m)
  • His winning mark earned him his first career trip to the indoor NCAA Championships
  • Enters the championships with the seventh-best mark in the shot put 

Saturday:
Zack Anderson | South Dakota | High Jump – Saturday, March 14 (1:15 p.m. CT)

  • Won his third consecutive high jump title at the 2020 league indoor championship with a leap of 7-0.50 (2.15m)
  • Sits ninth in the high jump field with his indoor school record-tying mark of 7-03.75 (2.23)
  • Will be the fourth national meet he is competing in

Helen Falda | South Dakota | Pole Vault – Saturday, March 14 (4 p.m. CT)

  • Finished runner-up at the indoor league meet with a vault of 13-08.50 (4.18m)
  • Enters the competition in 12th with an indoor-best vault of 14-03.50 (4.36m)
  • Has qualified for every national meet since transferring 2018 

Maddy Nilles | North Dakota State | Weight Throw – Saturday, March 14 (4:30 p.m. CT)

  • Won the league indoor weight throw title with a mark of 70-11.25 (21.62m)
  • Goes into the championships with the 12th-best mark in the event (72-04.50, 22.06m)
  • Will be making her second straight appearance at the NCAA Championships
